Bull being protective

Well the bull was put back in with his girls the other day ( I know just a little early). When I went to check on them last night (dark) I took a truck that was a customers and that docile hereford of mine went about half crazy when I gave them some grain. He came at me and then stoped, then kind of danced around. You think He just didnt recognize me in strange truck and being dark or something else going on?

A guy here said might be (herdbound) dont know if I spelled that right or if I heard him right. I hate to get rid of him now.

you couldve upset him being in a strange truck.but im not sure.but i would watch him.dont give him a chance to run at you.scott

Go out during daylight. See if he does the same thing.
My guess is it was a strange truck and dark...he didn't know it was you. When he got close he thought it may be you that is why he backed off.
Try it during sun up but be careful.

He will be four next year april I think ( would have to look to be sure) He is out of CL1 ARROW 6137 and a stanmore cow.

Went out this morning and everthing ok seems like. I just dont trust him. I guess that is a good thing to not trust but can be bad at the same time. I dont really want my family around him if he acts that way. He didnt seem irratated at all this morning, just grazing and checking some cows.

Shouldn't be checking them in dark anyway but had a busy day and didn't get to it and I like going out to check on them. Jay H

It's always good to be cautious but I would lean toward him thinking that there was a stranger coming into the pasture and he could have thought that it might be a threat to his gals. I've had them do the same thing before-I've even had cows act like that. I'd always be cautious but I wouldn't ship him out because of it.

I have had 2 bulls out of the Vindicator line that turned mean at 4 years old. Both bull where fine till about 4 then there attitude went to hell they went to the salebarn.

Are you the one that posted a picture of your braxton giant bull and calves or was that someone else? I really liked the looks of them.

Went out just awhile ago again and if you get between him and a cow he wants you to move. Doesnt charge or anything just moves in between you and cow. I will keep a sharp eye on him. He seems like a totally different bull since I put him back in.

Be dam careful around any bull. An average bull is two thousand pounds of muscle fueled by testosterone, and can cover ground about 10 miles an hour faster than an average human being.

One of the fellows who runs cattle in our community pasture got hurt very badly earlier this year (for the second time in his life) by one of his bulls. He has raised cattle on a fairly large scale since the late sixties.

He was luckier the first time, as he ended up with a broken pelvis as the worst of his injuries when moving the bulls around for semen testing. He got caught between against a barn when a bull pushed a pipe gate against him. The heavy pipe gate was later discovered to be bent around where his body was from the force of the bull against it.

This summer he was trying to load the bull up an alley. The bull turned on him and took him down.

This time he ended up with skull fractures, and although he was Medi-vacced in a Lear type jet to Vancouver for the best treatment in their hospital he is still not recovered.

After a couple months, he was released to come home.

Crying shame is that he is a grand old character, but due to the brain injury he received from his accident, he's just not the same anymore (small wonder). We thank God he's still alive, but his personality is very changed.

It must be very hard on his family.

Anyway, please be careful around him. Too often people become overconfident and careless around their stock and end up hurt or dead because of it.

Yes and Thank's I have the Braxton's and all of the young boys have gone to other ranches for herd bulls.
