I was watching the bull sale on RFD TV today and was wondering what the auctioner meant by 1/2 intrest with possesion? Does this mean the buyer only owns 1/2 of the bull? If so who owns the rest and how does this arrangement work? THANKS

Yes it means he bought 1/2 interest. The remainder may be withheld by one or more owners, who may in turn still sell "interest" if they wish. "Usually" the original owner or seller will only retain semen rights in this type arragement. They may have already used him, and/or collected his semen for future use. It is also a way for owners to maintain performance data active on a particular animal/sire and his resulting offspring that they may be getting, in case he sells commercially. Typically full possesion sells, but sometimes there are agreements for future use, or divided use for both or "all" the owners. "1/2 intrest with possesion" may not mean full possesion. Once in a while this is done so that a show bull can continued to be shown by the original owner until his show carrer is over. Some Ranches just like to keep their name on a good bull too!

I've understood "1/2 interest with possession" to mean you actually possess the bull, ie: you can bring him home and put him in your pasture on your cows. But if you ever decide to collect him, you have to split the semen collected.

Why wouldn't they just wait the sell him when they were through showing him?

If you were watchin the Circle A Beef Bull sale, then they were referring to the owner getting full possession and half semen interest. Just like someone said above, the buyer gets to take the bull home and use him however he sees fit, but if the buyer ever decides to collect and sell semen, the seller gets half the profits. Or at least that's how they explained it before the auction started on saturday.

Recognition, continued growth, value, return on their investment, the fact he is part of their show "string" (pen of bulls, get of, premier breeder, or best of six)
