Have been hearing some elk bugeling from afar early in the morning for several days. Saw the next door neighbor feeding his horses as I went out at about 8:00 AM, and he said a bunch of 75 came through just after daylight, split, 1/2 went across his place and 1/2 just north of our fence on the other neighbor's, then crossed the river and went uphill. Tonight, they're back in the neighborhood. Didn't see them, but there's a bull talking less than 100 yards out, on the other side of the RR tracks/fence line that border our property. Time to start checking that fence line daily. 75 or 100 head of wapiti screw up fences fast, if they get pushed. Cattle on the tracks really make a mess.

Would love to hear one here but don't guess its worth fixing fences.

There's a bunch that usually hang pretty close to us fall to spring, Kenny -- one neighbor has about 350 acres of hay ground + river frontage, and doesn't allow any hunting. They've learned "the safe place", but our place is on the path if they're coming in or going out. The big bull that goes along with my name was in here every year for 3-4 years -- PETE; he'd hang right in our front pasture and figured out our comings and goings. As long as we didn't cross the driveway towards him, we could easily get within 25 yards w/out spooking him off. The neighbor I talked to this morning, Rick, has about 1/2 dozen depredation tags for a cow, and I can use one of those in the hood -- some are for keeping them out of Rick's hay barn, and some for the "no hunt" neighbor's 4 hay barns, but we are able to use them on our place, too, since we're on the path. Never have done that before -- used a depredation tag -- but son's GF got a cow at Rick's on her way to work one morning last year, so I think I'll buy an elk tag (land owner/depredation tag can be used for elk if you haven't already harvested one) and a deer tag -- the mulies are in our fruit trees now, but haven't seen a big boy out there yet. No matter . . . not a trophy hunter. Been about 10 years since I've been hunting, so will go put a few rounds through the 7MM at a 50-75 yard target pretty quick for elk practice. Don't need to reach out any further than that. And some rounds through the .50 muzzleloader to get ready for a buck in the fruit trees, should the opp arise.
