Brucelloisis question

I just recently purchased two heifers from a brucelloisis free state and I live in a free state. One heifer is 13 mo. old and the other is 14 mo. old. Neither had been vaccinated for brucellosis. My question is.......should I vaccinate them now? I understand that if they are ever tested it could show up as a false/positive, but don't I need to protect these heifers before they are bred? My vet only says it is up to me if I do it or not. He's non-commital.

I believe they recommend vaccinating prior to the animal turning 12 months old. We always do ours shortly after weaning.

I thought there was a rule about transporting animals across state lines without having bangs vaccinations. I could be wrong.

I wouldn't worry about it. My brother hasn't done his replacements in years. Healthy herd, and never had a problem.

They don;t require vaccinating (in most states) if they come from a bangs free state. We've sold heifers that went to a number of states and we have never vaccinated. All that is required is a blood test.

since your in a bangs free state i wouldnt bangs vacc them.besides at 13 an 14 months old.they are to old to bangs vacc.

I thought the only Bangs in the US is the area around Yellowstone NP? Are there any other areas with Bangs?

The State of Idaho does adult vaccinations. RB 51 vaccine shouldn't show up as a high titer later like strain 19 did. I would have her vaccinated as soon as possible because you never know where your cattle might end up. In Wyoming and Idaho heifers that are going to slaughter don't have to be vaccinated. but if they are to be breeding stock they have to be vaccinated.
