British breeds at the Ekka (photos++)

Well it's that time of the year. The Ekka has rolled into Brisbane once again. Here's a sample of some of the British breeds that were on show this year.

The Herefords and the poll Herefords were shown together this year with a huge crowd in attendance.

A BIG cow from Baroona Park

A 14 month old calf I really liked. I'd have taken him home in a heart beat!

A couple of under two year old bulls.

More of continental and bos indicus cattle to come

Really like the 20m old angus bull. What frame score are those herefords? Stuck in the frame race?

I'm not sure what the exact Frame scores were but the Herefords were big tall cattle. Knersie I doubt you would have found any of the moderately sized, easy keeping and early maturing herefords that you prefer. They were mostly mid to late maturity patterns with heaps of growth and carcass. My understanding about the frame size and type is that it's a reflection of the market requirements here. Particurlarly the EU market which requires a certain size carcass by a certain age etc. I don't have a great understanding about the export market requirements but I'm sure some of the other Australian posters would be able to shed light on this.
