I've just had two days off work sitting at the Ekka watching cattle judging. Beautiful Brisbane winter weather, Ekka food and lots of cattle that have been hitting the feed bucket hard. What else would you want to be doing. I saw thousands of different cattle but the following bull and cow were my show favourites. Neither won any major award and keep in mind I don't know much about cattle.

I'd use that Hereford bull. bet he has lots of good old Devon Court bloodlines. If he's at their sale next month he'll make $15,000 to $25,000. Typical of the good eyed Herefords available in our country.
if he's that typical how come he's so dam high

Can't open the pics.

Don't misunderstand cause I like the bull. But how would he do out on the open range in all weather conditions for herd breeding purposes?

tn, I'm betting he would do just fine tossed out to pasture for breeding purposes. For the most part, Australian show cattle are pulled from the paddock a few months before the show and given some extra feed to finish them and put a shine on them, and after the show they go back to the paddock. Mostly, Australian show cattle are selected from the ordinary paddock cattle, and they go back to the herd once they have finished their little holiday. Sure they get fed up for the show, but the majority of them arent hooked up to the grain bunker from day one like a lot of American show cattle. I say majority because there are a few exceptions, of course, that get fed to buggery and it ruins their usefullness as a production animal. But generally, Australian show cattle are just productive, commercial cattle, all spruced up and in their Sunday best. So I think this bull (he doesnt look like an over fed, ruined one) would do just fine at his job. In terms of weather conditions we dont have the extremes you guys do, he would handle our weather though.

JHH I think you may be right

I haven't seen a decent show bull posted on here from the US or Canada. The only good ones have come from here and Uruguay. I'll have a look at the bull and see whether he is sickle hocked when he is offered for sale next month. Kerens comments are spot on. Most of our show cattle are paddock reared with a bit of a spruce up.
