Alright so I have a bull with some heifers right now and hes been with them since March 9th. I go out to my grandma's farm after school every other day for about 15-20 min and on the weekends I stay out there for a few hours. My problem is I haven't seen the bull riding or breeding the heifers. I've seen him sniffing and paying close attention to certain heifers every once in a while but no breeding. Do bulls typically do this at night? What are some ways yall use to tell if a bull has bred a cow? I'm sure this bull knows what he's doing because the guy I got him from has calves out of him.

i put estrotect patches on mine but not for the bull but they will work the same or you can use tail paint. 15-20min every other day law of averages says you will never see it.

I am with the cows more than you and with more cows. I have had years when I never actaully saw a bull mount a cow. Then come fall at preg check they are all bred. As long as he is following them around, sniffing, and paying attention to single individulas at times, he is probably getting the job done.

I assume he is. I've got four farms that surround me and since as far as I can remember I've seen a bull ride a cow maybe twice. I guess I'm getting a little ancy and wanting to see results. How much do those heat detector patches cost? And since I've only got four heifers should I spend the money on the patches or just wait 90+ days after I take the bull back and have them preg checked then?

the patches are about $1 each he may have already bred them so a patch may not do anygood id just let them go and check them.

A tail chalk is just a few bucks, and will work on your cattle for years if you only have 4. I'd stripe their tails and watch for three weeks, then you know for sure if they are cycling or not... if not you know they were bred before you chalked.
