Breeding Heifers

by breeding do you mean when can you breed them or when will they start cycling and be able to get bred, wanted or not?

Heifers can start cycling as young as 6 months, but by the time they are 12 months old most will be cycling unless they were badly malnourished. Continental cattle usually starts later than british, but they should still be cycling at 12 months.

Breed them when they are at least 14.5 months old and weigh at least 65% of expected mature weight. They have to meet both requirements, to avoid dissappointment.

I was needing to know when they started cycling. I have a nine month old heifer that is apparently in heat. My bull will not leave her alone. Dang near got stomped by the bull in the catchout pen trying to seperate them. I keep the bull with my cows year round. Looks like I may have to split up my herd because I have ten or twelve heifers 6 to 10 months old and I don't want them bred too early.

She is bred now - time to think about what your next step might be.

Without offense, you might re-think your management plan with a chat with your local ag rep or veterinarian about the breeding age ranges and the methods of "birth control" available to you.

It is not unheard of for heifer calves to begin cycling at 3-4 months of age. You might want to rethink your management program.
