Just got back from an auction were I bought a bred heifer. She was suppose to be preg checked a few days before and showed being 7 months preg.

Got her home and put her in a pen with some other non bred heifers. Well they two of them were all over her, sniffing her butt, within a minute or two of unloading her two different heifers were trying to ride her.

Should I spend the money to have my vet preg check her? Or could this just be them getting all excited with new cow in pen? I thought maybe it was one of mine coming in heat but with two at same time doing this not sure what to think?

It's your money. If you bought her from someone who will stand behind the breeding, I'd hold off for two months and see if she calves. If you bought her at the local sale barn, do you have any recourse if she's not bred? If not, why spend the money?

she came from a reputable, high profile club calf sale. They would most likely stand by her. I just did not know rather I was being paranoid and calves will be calves and was probably no sign of heat here.

I can not believe they would make a mistake on stating 7 months preg on papers. This far along looks like no chance of making a mistake.

Often times the ones doing the "riding" are the ones coming in. The one being rode may not be freshening.

Could be a dominance thing being played out also.

It's probaly a dominance thing like flaboy said. This will often happen when you bring a new hfr or cow hiome and mix with the ones already there. I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree with the dominance thing also. I've moved bred cows from one herd to another and seen the same type of behavior. I'd also keep an eye on her in 18 - 24 days. They'll have their dominance thing worked out by then and you should be able to see if she's cycling.

Thanks for replies. Was hopping it was something like this. Would be really sick if it turned out she was not bred. I got the heifer as part of credit for a problem we had from a heifer bought last year that died. I would dread having to call them and deal with it, they might start thinking I am an idiot or bad luck! Which I might be but do not want them to know it :D
