Would it be better to buy Braunvieh bulls to put out on Angus based cows or Angus bulls on Braunvieh based cows?

I would say Braunvieh bulls on Angus based cows, because you will always have the ANgus cows and you can use alot more bulls on them better than you could with a braunvieh herd. IMO

I agree with the other responses. It's hard to beat an Angus based cow herd. You can put whatever type bull you want with them, even an Angus. :)

Ive been looking at Braunvieh cattle also, and had the same question. My concern with braunvieh on angus would be birthweights. I beleive the breed average BW for Braunvieh is +6 on an Angus scale. But I see people doing it.

Few years ago, we bought 7 braunveih hiefers, the 4 that are left are ok cows. They are on their third calves. First go round three of the original 7 died calvin. They hide in the thickest thickets, and we walked the pastures for days lookin for em. they had an angus bull on em that threw really small calves. But there calves were huge. Almost like they went past the due date. When we found them the calves hoofs looked like hooves that shoulda been on a 300 lb calf. I'll keep the 4 that we have left, but I won't make the mistake of buyin anymore.
Too expensive of an "experiment" if you wanna call it that. I'd done alot of readin on them, sounded good from all I'd read and heard, but things don't always work out the way they do in the books.

did you buy your cows from a particular breeder or at the sale barn?

My Braunvieh bred cows are coming in at 70 to 78 lb, birth wts., while the angus bred are 70 to 94 lbs. In 2 yrs. have not had a single problem with the Braunviehs. And those buggers grow. Fertile too, as I just had 1 calve at 5 days short of 13 mos. unassisted. 70 lb. heifer.

probably just a fluke mixing of genetics rather than a breed characteristic

Are you using a Braunvieh bull on Braunvieh cows? You'll probably get bigger birthweights crossbreeding Braunvieh cows to an Angus bull or Angus cows to a Braunvieh bull.

Bought them from a breeder. I'll admit, the one's we have left raise some pretty decent calves. But gettin burned like that turned me off of ever buyin anymore. I"m not sayin they are a bad breed....just not somethin I wanna try again.

Most of the cows I have now are out of mixed breeds bred Gelbvieh. I've kept only Braunvieh as replacement heifers as they have good length, depth, and the best disposition of any heifers I've ever had.

I don't know the numbers but for your females use the better milking breed and for your males use the calving ease and low birth weight breed. You may not end up with crossbreds (unless you are dead set on it)

A good friend of mine got into Braunveihs about 10 - 12 years ago, and it was a disaster. He used a Braunveih bull and pulled nearly every calf. When he finally figured it out (slow learner) and put a low birth weight Angus bull on the cows, they actually had decent calves. The cows are good.. meaty and good milkers.
