Done right branding is the only unremoveable method of ID.

Tattooing count?

Herd ID - yes - individual ID - not likely. Unless of course you brand a significant individual number on every animal.

You know I was just wondering about jaw brands the other day. Do they still do jaw brands after Bangs vaccinating in certain locales around the country?

We brand because it is regulations. We do it at vets office, great guy to work with if you are not in a hurry. I can tell you nothing can stop the smell, bandanas with perfume, or cologne, not even Vicks vapor rub. But we give a shot of ace to calm them then all shots and brand. When complete we put WD-40 on it to cool it and keep out Crap! Then we takem on home. In a couple of days the ones we have halter breaking we put triple anitbiotic on it to help it heal faster. Plus keeps out infection.

Not a totally bad thing but not a great thing either. But it is interesting trying to figure out the brands when you see them and when people meet your cattle for the first time.

There is nothing like the smell of burning hair and the sound of bawling calves to start the day. You don't take calves to the vet to be aced and branded. Just run them into a corral, build a fire, rope and drag them to the fire. Vaccinate, brand and cut them (safe the nuts). An ice chest full of cool ones and a lot of good food to be shared with good people. Brandings are one of the things that make life worth living. And besides in the fall you can tell which black calf belongs to who.
