Hello got a question has anyone ever had any bow legged cattle? I have a bull a little over a yearling and he's bow legged was wondering if I should trim his hooves to help his stance out or what I could do? Will this trait be carried on to his off spring? Neither parent was this way.

That's a structural issue you should cull. Should never have to trim hooves which is another sign he either has bad feet, legs, or both and likely will pass it on to his progeny. Cattle with poor structure likely are not going to have longevity so that's 1 thing I wouldn't take lightly when evaluating cattle.

As far as the trimming goes, the terrain and moisture can play into that. I couldn't tell you when was the last time I trimmed but thought about it several years ago when we had a warm wet winter and bumper crop of rye grass. I do agree about that bull being culled if bow legged. By the time summer rolled around, the hooves were worn back to normal.

Front or back legs? I've never seen one with bandy back legs, also very few with bandy front legs. It is a serious structural defect and a cull fault. I wouldn't bother trimming hooves on that one.
