Background for this thread is below: Fetal Protection Vaccines (MLV) - Lucky_P. I spoke to a Veterinarian at Zoetis yesterday about the the use and possible effects of Bovi-Shield Gold FP 5 MLV vaccines. My case number is 2013-US-32634. I wanted to know from them, if the MLV for BVD in their vaccine can cause disease in a fetus if the mother is vaccinated while carrying the fetus. His answer was no. Then, he explained they had not had a case that he was aware of. As the label warns, the vaccination of a heifer or cow that is pregnant can cause abortion. He said it rarely happens in a cow. Studies in feedlots show a 15% abortion rate in heifers that are vaccinated while pregnant. The Zoetis Vet said it almost never causes a cow to abort. He was not at all surprised the heifer I vaccinated while pregnant did not abort as it would be against the odds. He said there is no documented case that he is knowledgeable of where the vaccination of the cow while pregnant caused the calve to be born BVD PI. I told him I just had a calf born to a heifer that I vaccinated with Bovi-Shield FP and I had a sample in to determine if the calf was BVD PI. He said if the test comes back positive and it is not due to the heifer being positive and transmitting the condition to the fetus, that I should call him back under my case number and Zoetis might be interested in obtaining tissue from the calf and mother and that they might provide assistance to me (I guess because their vaccine caused my calf to be BVD PI, I didn't ask for details as that was not my purpose).

NOTE: A comment he made (BTW, he is employed as a contractor to Zoetis and has a part time Vet practice and his own herd of dairy cows; resides in PA), the non-MLV drug companies have done a good job creating fear about MLV vaccines. There is no question you get a better immune response with MLV. He made many of the same statements I have read authoried by Lucky_P including explaining the nature of how these MLV viruses are created using non-target hosts like goats etc.

you did the right thing calling Zoetis thats why they are there Zoetis is very helpful if you have a problem and will cover alot of expenses to make sure its right on there end. lots of MLV haters out there i believe in whatever works for whoever ive been on MLV for years no problems at all but i dont give it to bred animals even though as long as mine have been on it it may be ok, but still not gonna do it, ive had no abortions that id relate to MLV and they breed back just fine but im always 30 days ahead of breeding.

He said there have been claims but research they have done has yet to confirm transmission of BVD to a fetus if Bovi-Shield FP is used properly. They are willing to get involved if you think you got one. I like Zoetis products.

Ron,
I don't disagree at all with him - but still stand by my recommendation that you PI test that calf - if for no other reason than your own peace of mind.
I'd be more concerned about the IBR fraction potentially causing abortion than BVD - but have some doubts that the IBR strain in Bovi-Shield (and probably other major biologics manufacturers' products) would do so.
Have seen studies where naive bred cows were penned with stocker calves that were vaccinated with Bovi-Shield; no abortions occurred, and no cows seroconverted, indicating that there was no viral shedding - or, at least, not at a level to pose a danger to pregnant unvaccinated cows.
