This has been a crazy year and first time in 7 years I haven't killed a deer on the first day which was 11-3-12 and to today I have not killed a deer seen a monster 180yds away and some does. I guess I should stop trophy hunting and fill the freezer. I also had a mother bobcat and 4 babies come out and go underneath my stand... CRAZY YEAR....

Well our black powder season doesn't start till Jan.
Skined two Sunday, most is in the freezer already except what I am smoking.
Slow cook the sholders in the smoker with pecan wood until the meat falls off the bone.
Wife then chips it all up and freezes it makes for some fine sandwiches.
Next couple I will make sausage out of.

Sounds good... I normally make mine into sausage only everything... I shot a monster today and blood everywhere then it just stopped i looked for 3 hours he must have stopped and got a cork and blood donation somewhere now i gotta wait for the buzzards to tell me where its at. I swear this season is rough and im almost ready to quit.

I mainly use a CVA trapper 12 gauge mod barrel in BP season. Lot of deer have gone to sausage heaven from a load of double aught out of that shotgun. I like to work up close, come daylight I will be in the woods with a 16 gauge loaded with double aught. I have let a bunch pass trying to get a really big eight point. Rut is about over here and there are so many acorn's I might have to settle for one of the smaller nice bucks.

Did you find that buck? And we shoot does for meat here. We go by the rule "if your not going to mount it don't shoot it". The only ones
that shoot young bucks are the kids and women. But we shoot at least 50 does per year and we still have way to many.

Told the wife I was going hunting in the refridge in the morning at least I would have something to read and eat.
I know where he is beding down 15 acre saw briar thicket.
Dang acorns are like walking on marbles, and the rut is on the downhill swing.
Until we get some rain and sour the acorns we are screwed they have went nocturnal.
They are not having to scrounge for food.

We don't have any acorns again this year, so the deer are on greenfields, and feeders. I sure wish I could go but my old bones are hurting for some reason. And all the family will be up Saturday for a week to hunt the rut here.So look out here I come, Ibuprofen 800's and adrenaline will keep me going. Sure can't wait to see my oldest boy. Families that don't hunt together really miss out.

Well I know about old bone's, this boy here had a talk this morning with a 16 gauge.
Had 3 bucks chasing a young doe in and out of a yaupon thicket and I got a clear broadside at 32 step's.
One load of double aught in the rib cage was all she wrote.
I am eating Volteran pain pills now it is like aleve on steriods.

Congrats CB! Nice buck there. I see you carry them the same way I do when I can. I keep striking out left and right on deer this season. I have never went this late without a kill in 30 years (unless I missed the whole season while deployed somewhere).

It will happen Hoss just got to be about half buzzard and keep hanging out in a tree.
That boy wasn't the biggest rack I have killed, but he was one of the largest for this region body wise I have seen in a long time. Wished I had put him on the scales now.

I've never shot a deer with OO buck I bet it hammers them.

Eight 33 cal pellets through the rib cage is a show stopper.
I haven't shot a deer with a rifle other than a muzzleloader since 1978.
Here in the thicket a shotgun has a place when 90% of your shot's are less than 60 yards.
I know of a half dozen deer lost on the lease this year to 30-06's. Here it is about putting him on the ground and shoot him again if he moves. To many deer are lost in this jungle running off shot with a rifle to be found in a couple days by buzzards. The person will have walked with in 20 yards of the dead deer and never see him.
Now ever shotgun is like a woman and pattern's different you have to figure out the choke they like..
I have two BPS's and both will put six out of eight pellets in a baseball cap at 40 yards.
Now one want's a light full choke and the other Improved modified. Neither will pattern as well if you switch the chokes around, there is not much restricton difference in the chokes that is how finicky they can be.
I shoot a BPI tested hand load that is humming those pellets at 1260 fps.

LOL here deer season if its got one antler alot guys here will drop 60 dogs on it to kill it. I know its not good management but some clubs here do that. We dont shoot any bucks that horns will go in 5 gallon bucket or theres a fine during the firearms season. We burn up does though.

Here there is a guy that custom makes choke tubes and I always have them work on my shotguns and he has my browning gold hunter shooting great at 90 yds with triple 000 I have dropped a standing doe in her tracks with it hes awesome.

not always they can carry 00 quite a ways sometimes

You are right as I had to shoot one that I had to throw away a shoulder to keep him down, big 11 point emptied the gun on him at 18 steps and he kept getting up .That was back when we could run with dog's adrenaline had him pumped up as he had a bird dog building a fire under his ass. We used a 3/4 bird dog hound cross they would smoke a deer for maybe a 1/2 a mile turn around and come right back to you. We quit the hounds always having to try and catch them or they wouldn't be back till the next day. Them bird dog crosses would build a fire under one, when you heard them bird dogs you better have the gun up and the slack out of the trigger. I have shot a hundred that when the deer hit the ground the bird dog was on top of him. We had an Airedale also that was one hell of deer dog but wouldn't bark we had turkey bell on him. I not saying I won't loose one with buckshot still hunting but I am pretty picky about my shots. The thing that makes the shotgun so good in the jungle is knockdown and if he gets up you can get on him again in this thicket. That is what scews the rifle boy's up so bad.
