black baldies some say they are the best cows to have.but is it best to have hereford cows and black angus bulls? or black angus cows and hereford bulls? also what would be wrong with a brangus instead of straight angus? if you use brangus will you maximize heterosis also?

Fit the cow to the country... Angus or Hereford cows.......it doesn't matter. The cross is still going to be 50/50.

Brangus x Hereford is the ticket to make the SuperBaldie in this part of the country. You get a good replacement heifer prospect and the bull calves (steers) sell great too.

It is interesting how this 3 way cross is supposedly going to make you good replacements and bulls, more so than any other 3 way. The 3 way cross is the way to maximize heterosis. Take a F1 cow gives you the heterosis in the cow, and then crossing her to another unrelated breed, gives you the ultimate heterosis in growth of your calves. But this is supposed to be a TERMINAL cross. At least, this is what the experts are telling us.

Now, my idea of the ultimate black baldy is Black Angus/Shorthorn x Hereford........

Randi, I should have said steers....but a 500 lb. bull calf (to be made into a steer) sells just fine too. Wouldn't think you would want to brahma part where you are, but they put the heat tolerance into the angus and herefords for us. (yeah my angus and herefords have been spending a lot of time swimming lately). Brangus are hanging out around the trees. That brahma and angus temper is reduced a whole lot.

Ahh, I understand now. Brahma don't do real well here, at least not high percentage ones. Herefords certainly will tone down the tempraments on anything a bit tempermental, but they need to work on their growth rates, a bit too late maturing to have straightbreds. They make some darn good crossbred cattle though.

Many folks don't see the SuperBaldie as a 3 way. If you have a recently composed brangus cow (or bull), maybe so. Then again, if you actually got down to the hair splitting, pure brahman is a composite too. SuperBaldie replacements are a premium to be reckoned with. Steers don't do bad either because you have trimmed a little ear.

If I were to go with a herf, shorthorn composite in this climate, beefmaster has it going on. Put a terminal bull over them to match the market demands of the period. That is a lot of pounds to sell at weaning time.

It is all about location, where you live , and what sells best......

IN Texas, S. AL., Miss., Fla. I would want some Brahma ie. Brangus, Gerts, or tiger stripes...

In mid - south, Do not need any ear, so No Brahma.... Select your cattle choice for the heat or cold of your world.....

BUT, BLACK BALDIES ARE HEREFORD X BLACK ANGUS CROSSES, anything else is not a true black baldie......

Beef specialist says put the Hereford Bull on the Angus cow. This maintains milking ability as herefords aren't known for that - 8)
Valerie
For tougher conditions the opposite would be better as angus aren't exactly known as hustlers.

Most of your "points" are pretty dam pointless. You need to travel a bit more and learn about "other" cattle.

Unless it;'s registered, if it's red and doesn;t have a white neck patch to go with the white face around here they call them baldies or red neckers.

T.B. You should not assume what you do not know....I bet money with you T.B. you do that fairly regular....

I know a Black Baldie is a f-1 Black AngusX Hereford cross...PERIOD...Not just a gernic name for black white faces..that is someone else mistake.
I know a Beef breed crossed with a milk breed is a by-product of the dairy business, not a beef cow, even if it can be eaten....
I know that most cattle in the good old U.S.A. , that are Black have Angus in them...
I know that most people, are here to learn, some are here to Brag , and others are here to be pain in the Butts.( That is me)..You are welcome.
