I have a 8 month old registered black angus bull. His fur is fluffy and has a red tint to it. Is this normal or is there something that needs to be done.

Where are you located? Call the folks you bought him from and ask their opinion. What flavor of mineral are you using ? Have you wormed him.

Had the same question a while back. I had a few that had a lot of red in their coats. I put out some different mineral and some cleared up but most just have a red tint. I had a red calf born from a black bull so I'm assuming they carry the red gene.

purebred angus are not supposed to have a red gene. depending on your location you probably do need more copper in your mineral and the being fuzzy worming may help that.

If some reg. black angus cattle don't have a red gene where did the red angus cattle come from. :D

Besides the mineral I wonder if he's on fescue. That can cause a fuzzy coat look too.

You know there is a red angus right? There are lot of hetro blacks.

ive never heard of red Angus. but if you read my post it says not supposed to carry the red gene im not sure the percentage but its not many hetro but if you go to Angus.org go to classic, then rules and forms, then genetic defects and factors, then RDC it will tell you the ones with the red gene.if I buy a bull and use him on my purebreds and get a red calf im gonna be upset.

Origianlly angus were both red and black. Years back someone decided that only black would be considred angus. Just goes to show how tenacious recessive genes are becuase there are still black angus with a notation of rc on their pedigrees meaning red carrier. Only reason to be upset is if it isn;t noted on his registration that he's a red carrier. The reds are no less angus then the blacks, just an arbitrary decision made them undesirable by the black angus association

 did you live under the rock? :help:

If you don't want a red calf, just don't buy hetro black angus bull then but they existed and they are not rare.

Never lived under a rock if it was a crap shoot it would just be angus and if you can read and ill say again supposed. i know you can get red but like dun said they should be marked rc ive never bought one and felt like i needed to check and see if he was homo.e

What you describe sounds to me like it could just be that he hasn't yet shed his winter coat, and it's just dead and sun bleached. He should've shed out by now, if he hasn't been wormed lately that might help. That being said, there are some registered black Angus cattle that have a little red tint to 'em, even when they're slicked off.

Another reason to switch to red angus. You don't get red angus breeders asking why there is a red tint to their cattle's hair.

The whole copper deficiency thing is oversold.

Assuming they have decent mineral, and are otherwise healthy, I would attribute red tint to just being their normal color. Is there a rule that says black angus must be black as coal?
