Thought you guys might enjoy seeing these bulls.

Took delivery of five very young Black Angus bulls from Tennessee. The minute they got out of the trailer they began to loudly bellow with a horny yell then follow and sniff the heifers and cows looking for the girls and ladies in heat!

They wasted no time in getting used to the new ranch. It was very enjoyable to watch them for an hour or so.

Only concern was that they were a little fuzzy haired. Not like the shiny slick Bulls I have been getting and have been told to prefer. My more experienced ranch hand (than me) said he thinks it is because they are still young (only 16 months) and he said maybe because they came from cold TN and will slicken up and thicken up their bodies too soon. I did have them semen tested before I bought and that showed them "good for breeding". They were all Registered with papers.

TN is where my Ranch Hand has been getting shipments for 5 or so years and swears by them. I only paid 1$,650 per bull.

Young green bulls with winter hair. Give em about 2 weeks on green grass and they will slicken up.

Thats no joke those black cows are worthless in the South unless they are brangus. Milk production falls off in the heat here wean little calfs what a formula for sucess.
The only Angus breeder I know in the area sold his bulls at the salebarn didn't bring much either. Now he has 3 Gray Brammer bulls in the pasture with them knotty little cows. Those calves will bring a premium.

Gray Brammer bull + Black Angus cows= ? What color and is there a name for that besides $?

I like a gray brammer bull. We had one when I was young.

The joke will be on him if he takes those Brahman X calves to the Montgormery sale barn. They seem to discount them.

At Uniontown, too! http://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/MG_LS148.txt

Or we can keep it simple and put the link to the Weekly Combined Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report in AL. It shows Brahman X discounted, too.

I was wondering when you were going to try and defend the little knotty cattle that are worthless here.
Wouldn't expected anything less from an Angus seedstock producer.

I'm not defending anything. I'm simply pointing out that in an area that you claim Brahman is king, THEY ARE DISCOUNTED AT THE SALE BARNS. Want to argue with that? Here's a link to all the sale barns in the state: http://www.ams.usda.gov/lsmnpubs/txCFAAL.htm#Cattle

I didn't look at every one of them, but the ones I looked at discounted Brahman X. I didn't see a single Angus discount. Maybe I missed it?

I know this hurts Frankie but Angus don't do well here and they are other members on the board that have seen the same thing in other parts of the state.
Now a Brangus, Braford type cattle bring top dollar find a good Hereford bull on those brangus cows or a Char on those braford cows will ring the bell at the salebarn.
You actually have calves with growth and momma cows that milk production maintains through the heat.

As much as you would like to try to deny it, Angus sales are doing pretty well in the southeastern part of the country. Angus bulls on test at the Beef Development Center are competitive with other breeds for gain. And it's hot down in Navasota.

Now a Brangus, Braford type cattle bring top dollar find a good Hereford bull on those brangus cows or a Char on those braford cows will ring the bell at the salebarn.

But don't haul those Brahman X steers to the sale barn or you'll be discounted.

Frankie, whether the Brahman influence gets docked or not isn't the point. The fact that Caustic and a few others needs a bit of brahman influence to keep the insets low while being able to wean a heavy calf at a younger age will in most cases more than make up for the dock at the sale barn on the steers, while the heifers may well fetch a premium.

To have longterm success you've gotta use cattle adapted to your environment, if straight angus isn't the solution there, so what? Angus will still be needed to make the F1s the same way hereford will be used to make the tigerstripes. I would be very satisfied if one of my bulls can help someone produce the ideal cow for their conditions, whether the bull would be used on herefords or not.

Make sure your cattle do have the good characteristics angus are known for, breed the best you can and you've done your bit. Your bulls or your breed may not be ideal in every situation, I know mine aren't, but I breed what I do for a purpose, and the purpose isn't do try and please everyone.

Interpretive Summary: Heat stress in cattle causes the loss of millions of dollars each year due to reduced growth and death. A study was designed to look at stress among four breeds of cattle. The cattle ranged in color from black to white, and were observed throughout the summer. Breathing rates, behavior, and hair surface temperatures were recorded. In a second study, behavioral observations were made each hour on two cool days and two hot days. In the hot weather, all cattle greatly increased the time they spent drinking water, stood more, and ate less than on cool days. Overall, it was found the dark-hided cattle, especially those with more body fat, were more stressed than light-hided cattle.
Technical Abstract: Heat stress in cattle causes millions of dollars of losses each year due to production losses, and death losses in extreme cases. A study was designed to determine severity of heat stress among four genotypes of cattle. One-hundred twenty-eight feedlot heifers of four different genotypes were observed throughout a typical summer. Respiration rates, panting scores, and surface temperatures were taken twice a day on 10 animals/genotype for several weeks during the summer. Twenty-four hour behavior measurements were recorded for two heat-stress and two thermoneutral days. Results indicate dark-hided catle were more stressed than light hided cattle. Heat stress more than doubled drinking behavior, increased standing, and decreased eating, lying, and agonistic behaviors. Overall, it was found that dark hided cattle with higher condition scores were more affected by heat stress.
