Well, I've been working on new house plans since the beginning of the year. They are now with a draftsman and I'm awaiting for the "final" adjustments to be made...then onward to an engineer for foundation and structural drawings. I am going to put the new home where the old one stands. The past few weeks has been devoted to packing up and storing "stuff"....and junk....I pulled the last piece from the attic Wednesday. An old trunk that was placed in the attic before the attic access door was installed when the house was built because it was to large to go through the opening. It didn't lack much of going through, but just enough I had to cut and remove the trim and jamb on one side of the access door.

The old house, although not all that old as houses go. It is the second my family built on this land. Is has fallen prey to tremendous foundation problems that the practical solution is to just start over. The new house will be bigger than a couple needs...but the wife has visions of grand-kids and family gatherings in our future. It will be by far the biggest expenditure I'l have done. It is an eyeopener, but by the blessings and guidance of the Good Lord, this journey is just a small part of His plan.

Anyway, my demolition contractor posted this last Friday.

Although with all the work and preparations made the past months, watching this made me sad.
 
Vette the best building site on my place is where Mom and Dad's old place sit's.
I just couldn't tear it down my heart wouldn't let me. Rita took out a third of it, lost a ton of heirloom's.
Lost one grandma's old rocking chair nothing special other than I used to sit in her lap in that chair.
I just repaired it with out the back bedroom and turned it into my man cave.
Just feel like I am closer to mom and dad when I go in there. I like to go sit on the porch like dad, I can still see him sittting there when I turn off the road waiting on us to get here.
I know it is silly it is just an old house. I would be more upset to loose it than the new one we built.
I can relate hard to tear down memories.

About 5 years ago my Mom decided to sell her house in Michigan. My Greatfather built it around 1890 and the house stayed in the family all those years. It was passed to my Great Aunt, then my Grandmother, then my Mother. Ken and I went up to do some work on it to get it ready to sell. I only lived there for a few years as a teenager, but it was very bittersweet to see it leave the family after over a hundred years of family stories, many happy ones and a few very unhappy ones. I, too, told myself it was just a house, but...it was still hard.

We just bought a 3k square foot house based on "visions of grand-kids and family gatherings". It has a swimming pool :x

Only problem is the family is mostly in the Houston area. When are the grand-kids coming by I ask?
They're not.

Hope your plan is better thought out than ours. :lol:

3k foot house..holy crap....

i built my house 15 yrs ago. hope to stay in it forever. hopefully my son will stay in it til he dies also

btw...thats killing that trlr unloading like that
 
Don't get carried away like I did. I built my house in 2007 and we built it off of a floor plan that we thought we would like. I ordered all of the architectural drawings and prints. We started building the house and realized that there was allot of wasted space.....................soooo..............we started "adjusting" by flooring in areas and finishing the area above the oversized garage. I wound up with a house just a shade under 5,000 sq feet finished not counting the garage which is another 1,200 sq feet :shock: . It is a very tall house and actually has 11 feet high rooms in the attic that I could have finished out but by that point I said enough is enough! Now that my daughter is married and my son is in college we have a house that is too big. I like my space and the big rooms but you know it is bad when you and the wife are texting back and forth when one is upstairs and the other down :(

Sometimes bigger is not always better db. :mrgreen: I have two 5 ton HVAC units running. One up stairs and one down. I keep thinking about how much fatter my wallet would have been if I had just built a regular house :frowns: But one of these days we may have grandkids though I hope not too soon....I am too young :cboy:

I know the feeling about "wasted space", I had a problem with the appearance of nothing but hallways connecting itty bitty rooms...I also hate a house that is "all chopped up", where you jut out a couple feet here and and then step in and out and in and out as you make your way around the house. Oh and the mother of all, anything but a square corner. Hate to see a 45 degree angle in a wall. Also I like a clean neat roofline, one that isn't a nightmare to frame, but not just a big box either.

My first two homes (when I was a single man) were under 1100 sq ft. Then I bought Mom and Dad's home. It was about 2250 sf. I was trying to keep this one to just a bit larger allowing for a bit more room in the bedrooms, larger closets in the master bedroom and a nice bath. The kitchen and eating area looks huge. Family room is actually smaller, but with an open area design, the kitchen, eating area, and family room eat up about the same area. "Formal" dining is larger because the old one was real cramped. Putting in a staircase to the attic rather than a pulldown attic access.... allows for utilizing some of that attic space as bonus area. 8 ft porch runs about halfway across the front with a real nice (a bit extravagant) covered patio in the back.
The entry from the garage is designed so that we have a place to "dump clutter" before it makes it into the rest of the house and we have access to the master bath and bedroom without having to go through the rest of the house.

I'd say how big but don't want DB faint thinking about it.... :D It is a bit more than what I first had in mind so I'll do the fainting as the check writing gets a head of steam.

Oh....but I did get a break today on my property taxes and insurance when I told them the house was gone.....
 
bwahaha..hey mines just 1800 under air. got some big porches.traditional ranch style with a 26x26 garage att.

do we dare put up our addresses to ggogle earth em?
 
DB....I'd still be safe. Google Earth or Maps doesn't recognize addresses out here in our parts. It will get you within about 3 miles. To find me you need to use MapQuest.
 
i hate visitors..even ones comin to buy feed or cattle....gates always locked so dont come lookin..hang on til i get the dogs locked up will ya

im easy to find..not so easy to get to
 
Supposed to get the drawings from the engineer Friday....Wife is getting tired of looking at an empty lot. Course I am too. I'm well over a month behind of were I expected to be. Even farther back than what the wife envisioned.
 
This is weird you brought this back up, for no reason at all as I was running the dozer at the job today, this thread and your story came in to my mind after not even seeing it for 2 months.
