two were so sticking quiet and mellow they wouldn't even load into the trailer. took two hours and we had to lift each foot in separately!

two were so spooky they jumped a gate and we spent two hours chasing them around the field before they finally were back in the barn (though they did hop right in the trailer).

all quite humorously ironic given the responses of the original thread trying to define an entire breed by one experience. for what it's worth, I've NEVER had ANY experience like this with ANGUS!!! Angus are PERFECT!!!

For the 'lazy' ones you just needed the right motivation for them.. perhaps a bucket of sweet feed? Or perhaps a hot shot?

I think I would have left the others where they were!

Well since you are an angus guy you probably spooked the 2 with bullhorns, 5 yelling Cowboys, and 6 biting dogs trying to load them :)

The quiet ones probably were smart enough to not want to leave :)

I'm in my second season of baldie heifers and I do find myself getting annoyed at all of the meandering around when I'm trying to get something done. I love the baldies but I don't think my own disposition can handle any more hereford than that. I enjoy it on a day off but the rest of the time it irritates me.

People always keep a few Herefords around once they ever try them, but it's just because they can't get them on the truck. Save yourself some trouble if you ever need to work those two through a chute and just walk up and give them the shot.

I have very little Herf left in my herd, but I vaccinated most of the cows (all the younger ones, missed a couple old nags) in the field while they were eating. Did 25 of them in about 15 minutes, working alone. I kinda like that

We have a few herefords spread out with our Longhorns and they are tame and great cows. If I wasn't in the Longhorn cow-Charolais bull business I would either have a herd of black cows with a Hereford bull or a herd of Hereford cows with a Black Angus bull. Black Baldies sell great down here.

Yellow WF calves sell great at the sale barn too. Hereford cows + Charolais bull = big yellow calves and big paycheck!

i was in reg polled herefords from 91 to 96 and yes i to bought some wild crazy cows as well as some super gentle cows that needed a hotshot used on them.it all depends on how the cattle was handled.because the ranch i bought most herefords from and 6 ranch hands that always worked them and done all the ranch work.that was because at that time the onwer was already 77yrs old.and had 60yrs of breeding reg polled herefords behind him.the old feller lived tobe well over 95.because when he was 93 he bought another farm.

One of this group is definitely too high headed for me. Maybe she'll settle down but spooky just isn't gonna work here. Funny, as I was originally saying, there's good and bad in every color and in every breed yet we stereotype them out of one bad experience.

I doubt it. My experience is high heads never change and too often pass the same attitude to their daughters--char cross in my case....but oddly enough, the only trouble I have with the few beefmasters I have is keeping them OUT of the pen. Pen gate opens, ya better be gettin out of the way cause they're comin!
