My first two calves born this morning, one at 3am (pedigree bull, sire born 1976!) and this two-year-old heifer was in early labor most of the night, I think, and had two feet out when I got up again at 7.30am. I'm not good at staying out of their business during this process, but as I could see all was progressing well from my house window, I left her to it and she did a great job. I like seeing heifers being great mothers. A little bit of turning as the calf hunted for breakfast, but once she settled, she's been shepherding the calf around to safety and repeatedly feeding on demand. Afterbirth out and eaten by 10am. All's well.

I had a dead prem one a couple of weeks ago and a friend to whom I sold another heifer had to pull a dead one too, so I was getting nervous something had gone wrong, but today says it probably hasn't. And the sun is shining. :cboy:

Thirty-three to go, including nine more heifers.

And there's grass, and tasty dandelions!
Sadly that's about it at the moment! The weather is warming, in spurts, between visiting cold spells and the grass is beginning to move, but there's not enough to feel plentiful yet. Typical spring. Far too much wind, always a bit too much rain and never enough sleep!

That's a two year old? You build them solid.
There's got to be more sun coming. We've hardly seen it all spring

It's all in the angle, guys. ;-) Her big sister is now my fattest cow in my low-input environment. Their mother does great daughters.

I'll get another pic, see if you still like her.
