I have twenty acres of native grass, moslty little blue stem. What is the time of year to put out some vetch and maybe rape. Also what rate .

In lieu of your county extension office, go to the website of Brammert Seed Co. in Muleshoe, TX. They are very helpful folks and have LOTS of grass seed varieties.

If your proposed grasses are warm season grasses, then probably the appropriate time to sow in your area would be March/April, after your last expected killing frost.

If they are cool season grasses, then sow in Oct/Nov.

Also, pray for rain...and good soil moisture for 2+ weeks after sowing (and, birds have already "gone South"...lol.

A couple of years ago, I spoke with the Noble Foundation folks about overseeding native grass with ryegrass. They did not recommend overseeding ryegrass because it is too competitive with the native grass in the spring. I would be concerned vetch & rape could also be in that category.

At an HRM school, Walt Davis mentioned that native grass could be overseeded with 5lb of sweetclover. The sweetclover I'm familiar with doesn't seem to grow as agressively as ryegrass or vetch. I'm guessing that is why sweetclover could work with native grass.

You might consult Dr. Twain Butler at the A & M extension center in Stephenville. He is a forage specialist & his # is 254-968-4144 ext. 224

Just a couple of cents worth.
