Bermuda VS Drought

The grazing pastures that usually hold up throughout the entire year has really been hit hard by this drought. I see more dirt than anything, never seen these pastures around here look so bad.

I know I'm not alone trying to handle this issue, but I was wondering what the Bermuda's outcome will be, and what others with this problem will be doing to bring their pasture back to their original state?

BTW, Good thing is we got over 1 inch of rain last Sunday and forecast shows more on the way.

Bermuda has a very deep root system it will be ok providing rains begin coming again.

Not sure what area of the country your from, but bermuda is very strong. Good roots, and even when it gets started, it comes on strong. You may want to watch the weeds this spring and fertilize and treat accordingly (maybe a little more than normal)

I am in Denison TX. I was wondering what effect this prolonged drought will have on my coastal Bermuda? I have had it die out from winter kill but have not had a drought like this since I have been in the business (27 years).

We fertilized with 350# acre of 23-7-14 after our July cutting but haven’t had but three ¼” showers since. I doubt that this fertilizer even had a chance to help with root development.

How much do you think that this drought will affect coastal and other grasses?

I would expect our stands to definitely be weakened, and, if we do get moisture this coming spring, it may be advisable to allow it to recover more than we normally do. In other words, treat it more like a 1st year stand. My other concern is the probability of winter kill due to dry freezing. I know it hasn’t been very cold, but if we were to get an arctic northern, the soil temp might drop lower due to the drought.



I would expect your coastal to perform better than most since you fertilize properly. Many stands have already weakened from the previous year’s drought and are still trying to recover. However, be prepared and expect a 25-50% loss if rain doesn’t come soon.

A nice steady rain started here about 6am, and it is still coming down. Rain gauge show almost an inch. I hope it continues. Now, if we can just have a good steady rain like this after we fertilize.....that would be wonderful.
