We have a show cow that recently calved (Oct.). How much grain & hay should she and the calf be eating during the winter months. It has been pretty cold here and we are not sure what they should have. There is not any pasture, either.

There's lots of variables to consider.

First thing I would do is change my user name -- the cattle business is no place for slacker. Sorry I'm so crude, but it's true.

What makes the user name so important on asking about cattle and rasing them? Slacker was a nick name that my family was given for fun. If you don't like the user name then don't be crude to them. Just don't help them, then just go on with life.

Depending on the size of the cow. I would say that she would need about 30 pounds of hay per day. I wouldnt give her more than 2-3 scoops of grain per day. As for the calves I have a creep feeder and feed them a 15% protein and 10% fat feed pellett. I let em have it free choice until about weaning time. Then I break the heifers off and feed them about 2 scoops of grain a day and all the free choice hay they can eat. The bulls I feed the same way. The steers I put them in a lot together and feed them all the free choice hay and all the 50% cracked corn and 50% corn gluten feed they can eat until slaughter. We have lots of repeat buyers for heifers, bulls, and steers, and they all comment on how good of flesh the animals are in when they come out to the farm. I guess maybe im doing something right. Im satisfied if my customer's are satisfied.

true, very true.

well why did your farm get it?

i may sound crude here too but i do want to say it. i have 15 calves myself and my sister only has 3. thats because when me and my dad are doin chores she sits in the house and does nothing. that what you get when you slack off and dont make yourself productive.
