I checked in today for the first time in a while. I'll try to do so more often.

Not much has been going on. I'm up to three grandchildren. My mother passed away last month, so dealing with that has been less than fun.

About a year ago I decided I was ready for fewer demands on my time, and I could stay as busy as I want to be taking care of the place at home, so I sold my cows and most of my equipment and gave up the rent pastures. I bought some calves this spring, turned them loose in the pasture at home, and took them to the auction barn yesterday.

This is the first time in a very long time that I haven't owned any cattle, but so far I haven't missed worrying about cows getting loose on the highway, or whether or not my bull is good, or how much fence he tore up, or having to haul and stack hay in the summer and feeding it in the winter.

I tried to take a break as well. That lasted about 2 or 3 weeks. Sorry to hear about mom. I was at the hospital visiting my grandmother when I got the call from my brother about my mom. Couple months later, grandma went. Few months after that, dad went. Jeez, that was a bit rough.

Keep on keeping on.

I plan to keep buying calves in the spring and selling them in the late fall for as long as I can take care of them, or maybe longer if one of the grandchildren takes an interest and wants to help.

From me also... glad to see you back. Very sorry about your mom, I can well relate. To @MurraysMutts situation also.
Sometimes you have to sit and reassess what you are doing, and go in a sideway's direction like you are doing. Glad that you are still wanting to do some farming.
Hope you have a good holiday season, remember the good and say a prayer for all the years you had your mom... I miss mine terribly. She was the glue that held us all together for so long...

Good to see you back here. Saw an old thread just a few days ago that you were in and wondered how thing were going over in Grimes County/Navasota/Brenham area.

I'm completely out and now living in a subdivision in Copperas Cove Tx with a 6' tall Privacy fence/swimming pool/an actual lawn, ...the whole 9 yards of misery.
Hope your cattle 'retirement' is much better.

Sorry to hear of loss of your Mom.

Hey Rafter. Glad to hear from you. You were kind enough to have me out to your place 10 years ago! I finally retired from the Marines and bought some land in Missouri. Running low cost Cows on there for now. Sorry to hear about your mother, prayers to you and your family. I'm sure you will do just fine running the stockers. Picture is some pairs I sold this fall when the grass started to get short. Thanks again for your hospitality. I owe you a beer!
