Been doing Math wrong all this time

I'm missing something here... (probably literally, if there's an example of working on that page, dial-up hasn't loaded it)

One thing I know is that looking at something like that and knowing the answer isn't good enough, and hasn't been good enough since I was in school thirty years ago.
"show your working!"
"it's the right answer"
"but you need to show how you did it"
"what do you mean how I did it, I just did it, that's the answer"

...which is exactly how it should be if you've been taught the basics. Asking to 'show the working' is a bit like asking what letters are in the word 'the' or what processes you use to take a breath.

Regolith, I hope your dial up will catch up so you can see the video. This is how they are now teaching 1st grade how to add. Makes no sense.

I really hope this is a joke. 32 - 12 should be a picture in your mind not a process of whatever the he!! That was.

I can't see the vid either... I'm on a connection only a step up from Regolith's (cell phone)

Without seeing the vid, I'd say you're supposed to say 2-2 = 0, there's no carryover, 3-1 = 2, so the answer is 20. I worked on a math program for the computer, and had a heck of a time remembering how to do long division!, let alone how to make the computer do it

Allen, I am afraid to tell you this is no joke. Common core is coming to a school near you soon
After watching that I understand the crappy kindergarten math now. I have had a hard time all year trying to understand her math examples.

That is just plain ridiculous!!! And we wonder why are children are failing at the most basic of levels... How many of you have ever been checking out at a cash register and looked at the young person behind the counter when it came to giving you back your change when you pay in cash... if it wasn't for the cash register actually displaying what that amount is... they would be totally lost!!!

If baffles me how someone can go through life and not even comprehend basic math skills!

Okay I looked up some of the common core work sheets and can understand some of them. I think with a good teacher and teaching the children when they are young then they will have no problem with it. I know that the metric system is used world wide, and it is hard for me to use, but if I had been exposed to it instead of the fractions then I would be able to use it very well. When I started my career in drafting we were using decimal equivalents. Going from measuring in fractions which was very common in early manufacturing was a change for me. Took awhile but I caught on. If we do not let someone teach the children that are smarter than we are then we will be pretty dumb before we know it. How long have you been using the computer I have for quite a while I do not how it works and am still pretty dumb about it.
