My first elk, just got back from Colorado last night.

Hardest frigging thing I've ever done, by far.

Ha! We high-tailed it Tuesday night as soon as we got him out of the woods, took I-70 home - a tad over 5 hours to get 120 miles. Vail Pass was a parking lot and the backroads were "sporty" at best. Stopped at the shooting range between Salida and Buena Vista on the way out, that thing is nice! Rang the 500 yard steel elk with my first shot, I'd say the rifle weathered the trip nicely.

As much as I hate horses, I'd have killed for a couple of them on this trip. Now I know what you meant when you said that was BIG country!

Friend of mine shot a cow out of the same group at the same time, 6 pm Monday afternoon - 2.5 miles straight up the side of a mountain. Gutted and stashed the cow, quartered and hung him in a tree and made it out of the mtns at 1am with his head and loins. Back in the next morning at 8am, out at 4pm with the rest of them. Doing all of this on foot at 11k feet with the lack of oxygen is an eye-opener at best.

Ya'[ll went the wrong way. You should have come back thru Salida that storm came from the North and you drove right thru the teeth of it. We have another one coming in on tuesday night just as I am leaving for South Dakota.

I found years ago that a tree is P poor eating compared to elk meat.

Even if there was such a thing as "good" barn yard buzzard it would still run way behind even bad elk in taste.
