had 7 calves in the last 24 hours. 4 bulls and 3 heifers, of which 3 were natural serviced, 3 were embryo transfers, and the last one was AI'd. all are doing OK but i did pull the last one. she was a first calf heifer - and i wanted to be sure everything was ok before going to work. also spent quite a bit of time in the cow lot last night getting eartags on calves whose mothers didn't want to cooperate earlier. all in all a pretty productive night.

i do that also, but someday i hope to have a calving barn with pens. even though my cows are pretty docile, i still like to keep a gate between me and the cow if possible. the barn would also allow for more sleep at night not having to 4-wheel around looking for the cows. could also put video cameras in the barn so i wouldn't even need to get out of bed. :D and since my kids like to stay up late- they could watch the T.V. monitor :banana: just think, if i hadn't been up all last night - i wouldn't have had time to come up with all these good ideas :lol2:
 
Rob, that's what we have. I have 4 cameras in our old barn. I lay in bed & click the button changing cameras. Now we have a new barn with calving pens in it & I don't have any cameras in it - YET!! I WILL have some next year. The only thing is the ones I have were real cheap. Wireless, but only a 100 ft distance - got cheap out of some catalog. My new barn is lots further away, I won't be so lucky this time. So I put the ones I "assume" are the closest and also all the heifers in the old barn & not so close or older cows or potential bad temperament cows in new barn. I have headlocks in pens in new barn, so I don't have to go in pen with cow loose if needed. I do have a few that you DO NOT want to walk into their pen. They are fine outdoors, but way too protective inside for this old body.
