It seems almost everyone has an explanation for the problems confronting the beef industry. It may be beef quality (lack of marbling, etc.), fat/cholesterol scares, BSE hysteria. I suggest there is another endemic problem that many people would rather avoid.

Below is a list of the kinds of animals commonly raised for meat production in this country. It is not random but arranged according to a scheme. Actually it conforms to two different sets of criteria.

Anyone care to guess what those criteria are?

CHICKENS
TURKEYS
PIGS
GOATS
SHEEP
CATTLE

Probably not the answer you are looking for, but they are in the order of the large factory farms being able to control the production and who makes the profit. Chickens, turkeys and pigs are all factory farmed and the individual has been run out of the ownership, decision making process. Goats and sheep can all be raised in small areas, have quotas as to how much mohair and wool can be sold and can be factory farmed by companies as they want, also. Cattle are last on the list and they are the only one that the government has not found a way to factory farm or to be able to take the individual out of the ownership and decision making process, but they are trying hard every day of the year to change that.
