Do people still raise them? Was the meat as healthy as some people thought it would be? Just thinking out load, a neighbor has bought 2 buffalo females and it got me to thinking

Yes people still raising them but the beefalo are getting uncommon. Lot of bison hybrids out there and I know a dairy farmer has a young bison steer with his dairy herd. Of course they ate that bison steer.

I was thinking about putting a buffalo(bison) cow or two in with my herd, purely to raise the calves for eating purposes, i have brangus bulls, thanks for the response, I just bought a dairy steer to put out on grass and eat this fall

The best thing is if you get a weanling bison heifer, otherwise a mature bison cow won't accept a domestic bull or even tolerant any domestic cattle. Also I would be concerned about the fencing to keep a bison inside the pasture. That said, why not buying a bison steer for eating purposes instead of dealing with an overprotective momma bison.

hadnt really thought about going that route, it does make more sense, I was thinking down the road that I might get more meat for the money if I had a cow and got multiple babies over the years, any idea what the cost would be for a cow, heifer, or steer, getting a heifer first makes a lot of sense, thanks
