We have 2 cows left to calf.
The weather is gotten cold and snow here in Minnesota.
What do I need to do?
I have leanto type shelters that are open on the south side I have put carpeting over one opening and put about 2 feet of straw in there.
How warm should I make it for them? They go outside for hay and water
Thanks for the info Jeff

Depends on the weather and the cow. Some will crawl into the cattails, or lay up behind a bale ring, and have no problem. Others find a cruel and private spot to kill the calf.

They don't need warm unless it is really cold. Then you need to help dry off the calf and get it started. They always need a dry spot out of the wind unless you are a big risk taker.

The problem with a nice calm lean to is they may decide to have more privacy and then move off to a calf kill'in spot out in the open. You have to lock them up away from the rest and check them periodically to be totally safe.

Lock them up in the lean-to and haul feed and water to them. You just might have a chance at a live calf. Otherwise, you'll likely find a Popsicle in a snowbank. Going to be a pain to haul water and feed everyday to them, but take it as motivation to pull the bull(s) earlier next year.

Thanks
We found out it was a weak semen count from the bull. Thought they would calve a lot earlier but when we had the vet. check we leard a lot.

How long after the calf is born before I let them go back with the rest?
Thanks again Jeff

I had a heifer give birth last January at 0 F with a snow on, and the calf did excellent. I just found him the next morning looking great. I'm not saying that's the most common, but that's one of my experiences.

Very True, cattle even calves can handle bitter cold as long as they are dry and out of the wind.
