Summary:

A new federal law states that when you annoy someone on the Internet, you must disclose your identity. Here's the relevant language.

"Whoever...utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet... without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person...who receives the communications...shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."

That's what I was thinking. I guess we just need bigger government to protect us from ourselves. I think I'll apply for the Cyber-Swat team for when things really get nasty. I think this went into effect because a teenage girl got harrassed via her computer, from what she thought was a boy that started out as a crush thing, but then turned into a viscious and cruel bashing of the girl, making her feel real bad, even suggesting to her that she should kill herself. You have to remember that teenagers are very susceptible to peer pressure. Turns out that the boy wasn't really a boy, but the Mother of her one of her friends that they had recently had a falling out with. the Mother was mad that this girl had ticked her daughter off, so this was her solution, harrass this poor kid online, call her very bad names, make her feel so bad, that she hung herself in her closet. This kind of stuff should be punishable by law. How effective any kind of law will be, I'm not sure. But I know this case at first was brushed off, it wasn't until the parents pirsued it with law enforcement and the media, that action was taken.
