Banned beef taken for legal Canadian pork seized in St Petersburg 11.09.2007

A consignment of Canadian meat banned from import to Russia has been seized at the port of St Petersburg. The documents attached to the cargo said frozen pig liver was delivered in containers. However, in the course of the inspection beef liver was found instead. It should be mentioned that earlier Russia imposed temporary ban on raw beef meat and other beef products from Canada.

Russian imposed the ban on import of Canadian beef and cattle meat in 2003 due to a case of "mad cow" disease registered in the country. In 2007 the ban was lifted partly: pedigree cattle from Canada can be imported to Russia, while beef and products are still under prohibition.
