I banded a bull calf around 400 pounds or so and they didn't fall off. band probably wasn't tight. Anyone had this to deal with?

If the area below and above the band is hard, it is ok to go ahead and cut them off. We had some last year that "refused" to fall off and we went ahead and cut them.

Thanks, that's what I thought to do but needed someone to say they had done so. I intend to keep him for the freezer. He seems fine, just a site to look at, can't believe they are hangin on like this.

How long ago did you put the bands on? Has the sack shriveled up? Is it swelled up?

bamd went on late september and yes they are dried up looking but rather large hanging about 6 inches down. He is put up as of last night and has great appetite. Shows no sign of being sick, never has. Any harm in leaving him as he is and feeding him out? The more he grows the tighter the band will become....I guess.

You need to get a vet out to take a look. This one sounds like it was really boogered up

You don't need a vet. Have seen all this before, just cut them off or leave them alone and they will fall off sooner or later.

RBB; Can't you have problems if you get the band too far up on the calf?

higher tighter is bes=tter...its probly like a piece of leather by now. ivehad to cut em off but ya really dont need to. i cut em off cuz i figured the band would come off and i didnt know what wouold happen next. its a pretty tuff piece o meat by now. dogs liked it

Round here if you can get a cow vet your lucky. One thing I've learned bout cows (and horses) is do it yourself. With the help of folks like y'all. Thanks.

On these boads every time some one ask a question. Answer is call a Vet. I call a vet on ocassion, but every time I do there is $150.00 to $350.00 bill and a dead animal. The past few years I load them up with what I think they need, Sew them up myself, make splint for broke feet, trimm feet and get the he// knock out of me more and the same amount of dead animals and no vet bill.
I do go and get his advice and buy the medication from the vet. He said the reason they die when he comes out is they are alread dead even though they are standing.

Just an update from about a week ago. Cut them off, very little bleeding, gave tetnus and he went and stuck his head in feed trough. Doing great. Many thanks to those who have been there and done that. Vet bill would have probably been at least $300.
