Ok I banded a neighbors bull calf a week ago. I used an eze bander with the surgical bands. When I banded him he wasnt locked in the chute properly and backed out of the chute after I crimped the band. I didnt think it was a big deal since I just had to cut it and release it. I was there for a hour everything looked fine no swelling and band looked good. He called me today and said that his nuts look swollen. I dont get why he would just notice this today or if it didnt happen until now why it didnt swell immediately. I have banded around 50 bulls never had a problem. I am gonnna head over tomorrow morning and check him out. My question is do I just cut it off and reapply if something is wrong with the band. The bull calf is probably 500 lbs if it makes a difference. Thanks Mike.

I would say the agin you get there they will be a shrinking. If the band has been on a week run him back threw the chute and cut the sack off. Key word was looked swollen.

pull it down cut it off.....ive had em end up looking like piece of leather on there..

never gotten swollen much tho...im gonna listen in

The reason that he swells is because the band was not tight enough. Somehow you'll have to get another band or something on there to tighten it up, then split the bag to let what will drain out. Penicillin 10 per hundred, dexamethasone 2 per hundred, tetanus antitoxin per instructions. They can be hard to save when they get like that. I was at a neighbors one day and he ask me to look at his steers, long story short we saved 6 out of 10.

Hey guys thanks for the replys. I hope when I get over there tomorrow they really arent swollen. When I banded him the band was pulled and crimped the same as always he just moved after it was already tightened. I'm fairly sure the band isnt loose so i dont know how right he was about the swollen part of it. He said it looked swollen but he didnt actually feel it. Its a purebred angus with a thick coat so I dont know how much seeing your doing. He actually had sunk a ton of money in vet bills trying to save this bull calf when he was born. I think he had tons of problems with calving or something. Like I said I waited almost an hour to see if there was any swelling after I got done since he moved and told him to look the next morning. I just dont get how he calls a week later and says there might be some swelling. I told him after a week or two he could cut them off if he really wanted too. I'll check in tomorrow.

Hopefully he is mistaken. Anyway good luck!

Ok so I went over there this morning and his nuts arent swollen at all. The band is up high and tight and both nuts are in the sac. The nuts are hanging low like its 90 degrees out and arent shriveled up at all yet. I know theres no blood getting to them cause the sac would be swollen or have been constricted because its only 20 degrees here all week. The only thing I can figure is maybe because its so cold thats why they arent shrinking. I usually band all mine when its above freezing and they are shriveled up in two weeks. I am gonna go check it out in a week and see whats up. If anyone has any info on cold weather banding let me know.
