Hello. Does anyone know what causes a backwards calf? I have heard a few different reasons. I'm just curious on other reasons. I have heard of it happening if your cows don't get enough exercise, or if you have alot of ice during the winter, or if you have a bull that was born backwards and he will throw backwards calves, or that the calf is too big in the womb and doesn't have time to turn around. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

or if you have alot of ice during the winter, BS

or if you have a bull that was born backwards and he will throw backwards calves, More BS

or that the calf is too big in the womb and doesn't have time to turn around. I agree with this, but space is more of an issue than timing

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Other reasons that springs to mind...

Very leggy calves
Very heavy bone
Twins
Heifer bred too young or too light and didn't grow out properly
Nutritional issues from either overfeeding, underfeeding of deficiencies
