...can someone please explain this process, or what backgrounded means in regards to fed cattle?

Backgrounding is taken light to medium weight calves and preparing them for the feedlot. Pretty much getting them used to bunk feeding, captive water supplys and accustomed to eating grain. It usually the step between pasture/wheat and the field lot.

And, generally, they've been vaccinated and de-wormed.
