I would love for some input on a ration for ~550 lb steers, I have backgrounded steers for a long time, however always turning them out on grass, which i will continue to do so in a smaller capacity, the reason being, the registered cows must have the grass now, however, i have just completed a facility to background steers. I know several on here are very knowledgeable of rations for cattle, I will be contacting a nutritionist soon to talk to them about what i want to do. But, i love reading the discussions on here and admittedly lurk more than i post.

plan - I would like to take around 550 lb steers and feed em up to 750-900 lbs, depending on how much room i have and available paddock space. I would ideally like to put em on a high grain diet to achieve an adg in the ~2.7 lb range. A total ration summary would be terrific, they will be supplemented with an average quality grass hay, and the components of the grain ration would be cracked corn and dried distillers grains, any comments or ideas that could possibly assist me would be terrific, this is basically just a brainstorming post, but i would love to hear ideas from everyone!

Pull a representative sample of your hay and have it tested. Have test results available for your nutritionist when he shows up so he can balance your ration around hte hay. In the meantime you can mix 7 lbs. of corn to 2 lb. of DDG and feed this to the calves at 2% of body weight broken down into multiple feedings along with free choice hay. It will be a start until your nutritionist can balance the ration.
