My Honda Rancher is an electric shift. 4 or 5 times it just gets stuck between gears and there it sits. I end up loading in the truck and taking to the quad mechanic. So far I have been lucky in that it has done it in the driveway. There are times that if it did this up in the hills it might require a 5-10 mile walk. Even if I could fix it myself, would I have the tools with me up in the hills? I priced a new one with foot shift. I looked at what used ones are listed for on Craigslis. New is $8,500. Used seem to be $5,500-$6,500. Mine is a 2020 with 6,700 miles on it. Hmmmm $2,000-$3,000 to have new and get rid of this head ache. Decisions, decisions.
 
Mine was doing the same thing. I could rock it back and forth to get it in nuetral to start it again. Ended up being the Shift Angle Sensor. $35 part and 15 minutes to replace it. Maybe it's the same issue.
 
Interesting. I have been considering a rancher w/ electric shift. My dad shattered his left heal when I was a kid and I'm not sure he could use a foot shifter.
The foot shifters are hard for me to shift in heavy winter boots.
 
Ours is an automatic or manual with shift buttons but no foot shift. I think there is a manual foot shift with the esp shift buttons too? Too many dang options on the Ranchers. I bet the base model foot shift only would last forever.
 
My 2001 350 Rancher foot shifter works good. I also crossed wired it to where it will start in any gear. I have worn four sets of tires out and other than one recall never done anything to it except put new brushes in the starter a couple times myself. Also my 2003 450 Foreman foot shifter has been bullet proof also.

A guy I worked with had a newer 420 Rancher and had a lot of trouble with it.

Go online and search. Tons of cheap parts for those and they are easy to fix. There are tons of youtube videos on ho to fix them also.

I have a manual shift that was acting up too when trying to shift, both have clutches that wear. There was a little screw on the front of the motor. You back the keep nut off a tad and adjust the screw. It takes the slack out from wear. Tighten the nut back up. Every thing was shifting smooth again.

The ES buttons go out too and it's cheap to swap that little unit out.

Amazon has tons of cheap Chinese parts for them.
 
It most likely needs a shift sensor. Not difficult to put on and not expensive. Usually two bolts. Some of them are hard to get to. Buy a genuine Honda part. They are located in different spots on a lot of models so do a search where yours is at.
 
I replaced a couple of Yamahas with Hondas due to them being gas hogs. The Hondas were reliable and economical by comparison. They were both automatics and we never had any problems with them.

We sold them to buy a side-by-side and I preferred the Hondas. But the wife's top speed was only 12 miles per hour and that gets pretty tedious.

There was on the older models. If there is one it is buried somewhere else.

One of the times it did this before I had hooked up a quick connect for a sprayer to the battery. This took away too much juice for the electric shift to work. The latest time I got to thinking maybe the battery was getting older and too weak. So I hooked up a battery charger. The gauge on the charger said the battery was charged but it made the shift work. It has just done it enough times that I am getting tired of it. It needs to be 100% reliable. Not swapping out today. Just thinking about it.

Go with a SxS and be done with it you will never regret it. We did and never went back
There is a lot of SxS around here. But all the people who have them also have quads. And they use the quads as much or more than the SxS.
 
I bought a 2024 Polaris 450 Sportsman for $6700 this summer. So far I am pretty satisfied with it. Although it would have been nice if it had power steering, it steers a bit harder than our old Arctic Cat 400.
 
i told ya'll to stay away from those hondas on here.

that electric shift crap they put into everything just ruins them.

buy a yamaha or can am. no shifting.. no problems.
 
As much as I like Honda, I can't get behind their transmission designs. Why overcomplicate something that can be so simple.

CVT is the way to go.
 
I have heard very good things about the trans in the Pioneer. That will likely be my next sxs.
not sure if they've changed it, but those things would blow heat on you like crazy. also feels like it holds its shifts too long.
