I was on vacation a few weeks ago and picked up the book my brother was reading and instantly got sucked right in and had to buy my own copy. I've been reading it ever since. I noticed Jogeephus's new quote, and had to wonder how many on here had read the book.I think it speaks volumes. I realize this might be confusing but I am speaking of the book 'Atlas Shrugged' written by Ayn Rand.

I read it as well some years back I am not entirely convinced that we are not being lead and lied to by the Pied Piper.
 
Not an easy book to read. Very long and it took me a while to read it. I admit I did not read the loooong speech by John Galt. It does not take long to get the story line. The disturbing thing is how the malady grows like a cancer.

I try to tell myself it could not happen in America. Unfortunately I am more convinced it IS happening and the popular press, legions of everyday Americans and the majority of our elected and unelected ruling class are taking queues from AS pages.
 
Along the lines of this classic book and for those that have read it I have a question.

Why would a country like America be intent on following along the same path as the book? We know how it turns out and it can really only have one outcome.

I know and understand the futility of asking why, but this is too important to all of us.

If you have read the book and think I am Chicken Little please feel free to tell me. I'd actually take comfort in that.

We all know how well communism works out, but yet many still insist on it.

When I read it, I had a hard time putting it down! One of the better books I've read.

IMHO, what is happening in our country now, paralells with the book......and it scares me. :(

It also leads me to believe that the generation of my parents, was probably indeed the best generation. Even with the difficult times during the depression.

For the same reason the people in the book followed that path.
Power, greed, fear, stupidity, self doubt, political correctness, etc.

Take note that the ruling powers could not have stopped the collapse after things had gone past a certain point.
Does any intelligent person really believe our expanding national debt can ever be paid off in order to prevent a collapse of the system as we have known it?
Does anybody really believe the looters are going to change their ways?

Each generation begets more of the same.
They don't have a high enough IQ to realize the behavior and environment they choose to live in creates the problem. These people are a classic example of the welfare system of excuses and no cures.
They are not willing to change there lifestyle and expect a different result.
What they need to do is sit down and read some of Star Parkers writings the real conundrum would be if it could sink in there thick skull.
 
I agree that it is frighteningly similar to what is going on in our country today. I am embarrassed to admit that when it comes to politics I have been completely ignorant up until a few years ago. I honestly did not know the difference between a democrat and republican up until a few years ago. Maybe ignorance was bliss but this website has really opened up my eyes. Clearly something needs to be done and hopefully it is not too late. Very scary for sure.
 
7 months later and I haven't had a lot of free time for reading, but I got to page 882 tonight and it was frighteningly similar to what is going on today.
"Inequalities still exist among us," the newspapers were saying. "and cheat us of the benefits of our enlightened age." "Privations have worn the nerves and temper of the people. The situation is reaching the danger point. We fear an outbreak of violence." "We fear an outbreak of violence," the newspapers kept repeating.

I've said it a million times and I'll say it again, I feel like I am living through what i read in that book.

Instead of asking who is John Galt, I'm asking where is John Galt? Where is Galt's Gulch, I want to go there.
