Anyone planning on this sale? I am looking to go to Oklahoma again. Considering some cows out of Ricardo. Any opinions about this bull's progeny? A couple of lots are also out of or exposed to OU Superstar. Not sure I am interested in him. Code Red is also mentioned in 1 lot. Any thoughts there?

Have not used any Ricardo nor bought any offspring, but have not been terrifically impressed by what I have seen--might just not be my type of cattle though. OU Superstar is a polled Hatchet son which says to me that he probably puts a good rear end on 'em and he's also a National Champion. There are some photos of offspring in the last two SGUSAs, but have not seen any offspring in person. The comparison last month (July--Mosby Creek ad) of him in working clothes and him in show clothes present slightly different pictures. Have not seen any Code Red offspring either, so can't assert any opinion: did you see any of his offspring at the Customer Appreciation Sale that really caught your eye?

Thanks for the input about Ricardo. We'll see. Hammer and Hatchett are the reasons I am really not to excited about the OU Superstar progeny. I don't remember the working clothes picture. I look it up tonight when I get home. Code Red calves were all too young and I really didn't pay a whole lot of attention on them for me to make fair judgement at Liberty's sale. I do remember that they did bring good money though.

I've always liked what I have seen from Harding.

He has 4 lots

Lot 6 is out of Harding 44/8 and her dam is out of a Hampton cow.

Lot 7 is out of Briggs 036/96 (not familiar with him), the dam goes back to Hurricane and Fullen 227; sells with a heifer calf out of Liberty Ranch 45/215 and exposed to Connors State Cowboy 8/5 (not really familiar with either of them).

Lot 8a and b are bred heifers out of Cheeks 501 35/145 and bred to Harding 113/6 (again not familiar)

Brent Taylor has 2 lots

one is open and it is claimed she is cycling regularly but they have held her to be a fall calver. Not sure I like this

the other is line bred to Cow Tracker (don't know at all)

I have no idea. I went to maybe 2 point shows last year (Lawrenceville and NC state fair) and he wasn't at either of those. I was simply giving his resume, not necessarily advocating one way or the other. We have only owned one Hatchet daughter, and she had a pretty weak topline that broke right behind the shoulder. We just AI'd another cow to him, but she's super clean and has a really good topline, but lacking in power/capacity: we'll see what happens.

No Winrock.

We're not going now. Our house got hit by a tornado Friday evening. This is the 2nd one in 2 1/2 years. Lost a 40x40 shed and damage to the house. 1.5 miles of Barb wire fence that was less than 3 weeks old gone. Water damage everywhere, ceiling falling to our floor. ETC.

FEMA said the chance of a places getting hit twice is once every 400 years.

I'm so sorry to hear about your damage. I hope everyone is ok?

"Have not used any Ricardo nor bought any offspring, but have not been terrifically impressed by what I have seen--might just not be my type of cattle though"

so I felt bad about making this statement because I probably wasn't fair: my primary criticism is for phenotypic reasons: if I'm breeding for a show animal, which in many cases is the case, he's not the bull I'm going to use (and if you look through the show results for the National Junior Heifer Show, which many people use as an indicator, you're not going to see his name there). If you're looking for something that's going to bring you pounds at slaughter, I don't know how he would stack up, BUT I haven't seen his name at the top of the sire list on the bull tests or steer feedouts either where normally you see Briggs. He does have a large number of offspring in many prominent herds, so he must have some merit (you can do a sire search on the Santa Gertrudis website). Ricardo has 439 active registered offspring. He does have a number of Genestar markers which he should pass on to offspring.

EDIT: My Boolean operator was off when I went looking for offspring with offspring and turned up 8 results. I tried it on another animal and did not receive results when there should have been. Foot in mouth syndrome.
