Any of you guys use Apple Computers? Looking at getting a new computer. Going to up grade to DSL and computer is old and slow figured I might just do it all at once.

I am so tired of the computer freezing, getting viruses and spy-ware. Apple advertises that you do not have all those problems with their computers.

Any pros and cons from you in the know? Also wondering how hard it would be to adapt over to the way an apple works vs Windows 98 on an IBM.

not sure about over there, but over here it is not always compatable with things and soft wear is harder to get, windows 2000 is a better bet, and broadband is very fast now. My Son has just done an OCR course and does not reckon Apple at all. but it is personal choice. Millenium is also a good softwear programme.

If you are using windows 98 you would notice a hugh difference if you got a newer computer with windows XP.
XP doesn't have near the problems with freeze ups or some of the other problems that you are having.
Also on another point you don't need the latest and greatest computer if you just use it for the internet and other home use.

apples new tiger operating system is based on UNIX....Windows is based on good old Disk Operating System. a lot of the software that is available can be run in wildows as it was written for it, not UNIX. there are ways around it, but you need to be a real geek to play with those. Look and see just how many cattle software programs are out there that are versioned for the apple. Windows XP and a good anti virus program will be your best bet. You are gonna LOVE DSL....i got the 1.5 megabit hooked up recently, and it is comparable to a T1 phone line. My entire college ran on a T1, just to give you an idea of it's capability....I tought computer science and repair there, so i guess i do know something helpful!

Tech advisors are saying wait until you can get the new Windows product (I forget the new name for it) bundled with your new computer. Apple is good, I think, but it is swimming upstream because, as Mr. Gayle noted, most software is written for Windows.
I think viruses and such are over-hyped, as long as you don't respond to those emails from Nigerian widows or visit places you shouldn't. Keep the defenses up, but don't lose too much sleep.

We used to use Internet Explorer and no matter the amount of spyware/firewalls, etc we had problems. We have switched our browser to Mozilla Firefox, and have virtually no problems. I am not real smart when it comes to these things I just know this has made a HUGE difference. Maybe someone with greater knowledge in this kind of thing can explains the "whys" of this...

to add to what I was saying earlier, I have windows XP, on a DELL and McAfee virus scan and firewall they are excellent along with broadband 2.5 it is almost instant, press a button and it is there.

I am certainly no computer authority. But from personal experience I would say you should take that virus stuff seriously.

The school I teach at uses both. The Apples are the top choice in regard to the Art class. The graphics are better.
For everyday process, the Dell computers are the districts first choice.
Personally, I have a Dell and my husband for his business has an Apple . Unless you want games, you can find programs for either one. You don't get viruses with the Apple. Is one better than the other? I think it really depends on which one you feel most comfortable with. I don't think you could pry the Apple from my husbands hands.

stay with Windows alot of the new desktops are less than $600.And you'll have some compatability with your old programs and my doc.s If you want to learn a new system that is pretty well bug proof put a version of linux on the old system and watch it fly. Nothing wrong with mac's I've got one but I think you'll be happier with something your already comfortable with. If you get a new system and want help moving some stuff pm me.

Any new windows or Processors out or about to come out that I should be aware of if I decide on a Dell? Hate to buy and then a new windows is out a week later.

aplusmnt,

Can't say to much about new processors, but Microsoft does have a new operating program in the works, "Vista". Supposed to keep alot of piracy problems in check. It may not be out for awhile yet. We use XP Professional running on a Dell. Haven't had any trouble with it. DSL or another Broadband is advisable. Dial up is like the dinosaurs, really really slow. Michele mentioned the browser "Firefox". Can be loaded straight from the internet. Seems to run faster than the Internet Explorer.

The Dell website can offer you some suggestions on the different levels of computers. Sizes of hard drives, caches, etc. Whatever you do go for the speed, you won't regret it.
