I was at a club calf sale over the weekend. They had some shorthorn X steers that they said were "great appendage calves" Maybe appendix? What does this term mean?

Dee-
I think that this could be a little "Sales Manager Affectation" phraseology. The Sales Managers do have a very verbose manner when writing footnotes for cataloges! I don't have a clue what the real implication of 'appendage' means in this instance, but here are some possibilities:

Appendage: 1) a follower or successor.
2) an adjunct or an addition or increase
3) a contingency - incidental -accident  :o (This is possibly what the meaning is. Not necessarily planned matings. Or 'cross-breds')

I guess you can take your pick!

Dee, if they were shorthorn cross calves then the word was appendix. Meaning they can be registered as a % shorthorn and still shown as a shorthorn. Most shows will have a class just for appendix shortys. Most times if it is an appendix shorty it is also appendix maine or bred up some other way. Appendix shortys can even be black. Several of the big name composite bulls are dual registered, meaning they have papers with more than one breed association.

Thanks Cert. That makes sense now. If the bidding wasn't doing well, they would ask the owner of the steer if it was an "appendix", and/or if they had papers, then get a few more bids out of it.
