continues to rain on san saba texas, as flooding in the area hangs on. my property there is denoted as the highest (not priced nor best) altitude in the county. cows will not drown. too far from town and continued rain has makes ingress to property difficult. just writing in my log.

"be fore-warned", in a more genteel manner let me change that to "fore-advised" there will be nothing either controversial, nor informational, nor important, nor entertaining, nor worth your time reading. nothing of an impropitious nature will be alluded to. just ignore this missive and move on.

you were warned, er, i mean advised.

i have always done my best cogitative work at 3.a.m. ish. a time to pause, reflect, just enjoy the quietness of the hour.
not so much respite lately as too much turmoil to see, hear, and read about every day. chaos at its best/worst.

decided to use my imagination and attempt to amuse myself, only myself.

hypothetically i would never have any more cattle, but i might look at some other livestock or creatures to tend.
where to start?? no idea but then i see a deck of well-worn animal playing cards from a great-grandchild (they are all great!) that has outgrown and abandoned the game. i like a two party system to ascertain possible choices.

i pick two random cards from the deck.
first chosen party is buffalo (not bison). now the sub-choices are swamp, river, and cape.
this game may be more difficult than i thought. now i have to pick the subtype i would like to choose to raise as livestock.

the different types of buffalo have different numbers of chromosomes and breeding would be difficult. i do not think any of the veterinarians i use would consider insemination for wild buffalo. i will select cape buffalo as they seem to prefer grass and hay that can be found in texas. hmm, what is the daily hay consumption of a one-ton buffalo. more problems. i would now have plenty of land available sans cattle. but containment?? that type of enclosure would be suitable to hold these creatures. eight-foot high walls, three feet thick concrete, darkened fences to block view from outside?

how would i check on these critters in a range setting. i don't think any tractor/truck would survive. i no longer have access to an m60 tank in proximity and it probably would not outrun the buffalo anyway. i can just visualize an enraged (what other kind is there) cape buffalo hyperventilating as is relishes eviscerating my body and stomping the disemboweled parts into the dirt. with little hesitation that choice will he a "no".

party number two. the next card i drew is a llama. much nicer size as between the other two in card suit, depicting a camel and an alpaca. they would probably would not attack and run me down, although i do not know about herd mentality. on the negative, i can envision a llama urinating on my left boot at the same time as vomiting on my right boot. have read they enjoy such things. then they seem to enjoy defecating in front of me also. finding feed would not be a difficult problem. i do not think they require a specialized diet although i should check such. the feed costs should be minimal as compared to the previous party of buffalo. but their mannerisms are definitely questionable. the topper is a large one would be tall enough and able to look me in the eye and spit in said eye. that is a "no" too.

now my conundrum. do i look for a third party affiliation or reshuffle the deck. i am at a crossroad.

i think i have been typing while in a somnambulate state. thought i was dreaming, but the words are here in type. ok, enough blather as i momentarily confused myself. i just took a mental break but the decision was not in doubt. after all these years bovines have done me well. never really considered a change.

i do talk to myself sometimes but only when no one else if around. maybe i am looking shortly at 90 in a couple, but no signs of dementia (yet), although i may smell that way.

it's going to be a wonderful day in my neighborhood, i deem it so. whatever else transpires, it always is.........

The water buffs that I have seen were extremely docile. Led about or ridden by kids I'd guess no more than 10 or 12 years old.

Lamas are nasty. They'll spit on you and try to pizz on you.

The real money is in chinchillas......and emus.
