Anyone know about harnessing a horse for a cart? I bought a used cart and harness. When I got there the harness was in a bag. Turned out the lady selling it didn't even know how to ride a horse let alone harness one.
Now ive tought all my horses to drive. I got the harness mess out of the bag and it was a mess of leather. Im not sure exactly which pieces go where and attach to what. Im thinking im missing a piece but then I don't know because I have a piece I can't figure out what it goes to.
I took pictures but I figured id post them if someone thought they could help.

Do you have all the peices and parts? Could you have more peices and parts than go to one harness? As the lady knew nothing there's no telling what you got! :???:
Mother Earth News might have a chart..Small Farmer's Journal is really good info also.
 
Do you know if it is harness with a collar & hames? or a breast-plate collar type harness?

Too bad I don't live closer, I'd be right over to help you out.

Try those sites that dun posted. The Rural Heritage site may have the info you're looking for.

What a jigsaw puzzle! Hope you have a patient horse. The Rural Heritage site is probably your best bet, they also have a show on RFD-TV that is very informative. The harness would have to be rigged somewhat differently depending what you hitch to; whether the vehicle you are hitching to has shanks or not. Or whatever you call the poles that come up beside the horse on a cart or buggy, as opposed to an implement or a wagon.

This is the exact harness I have! The pictures of the leather harness half way down the page. Ive been looking all day and most of last night. Now I just have to figure it out from the pictures. I think the extra piece I posted goes from the chest strap loop to the "cinch". Thats what im thinking. Maybe you all can help? Atleast I found it. Couldn't find a price but im thinking I got a good deal even though im having all this trouble putting it together.

I'll stick with oxen. A yoke is pretty much self explanatory

O.K. so here's the latest.
I asked around and got a number of a guy who does both cart horses and draft horses. Called and he ended up coming out this morning. I was devistated at first. The cart wasn't a Horse cart its a pony cart. Strike 1. The harness was put together with parts from a pony harness, a horse harness and a draft harness. However the guy swaped out the pony and draft parts for all horse parts. So now I have a complete HORSE harness. He is also looking for a horse size bridle which mine didn't come with as he feels I should have this for safety reasons. He also talked about a W. Does anyone know what a W is?
The cart he wants as he just picked up some ponies and he is willing to trade me a horse cart. So we will see what carts he comes up with as to weather we trade carts or I sell mine and buy a different one.
So thats the latest.
Thanks to all who have responded and supported me threw this. Its been stressfull spending the kind of money I did on something I know nothing about. Im learning thought and thats the good thing I think. Maybe made new friends threw this as well.

He's probably talking about a "running W". It's a sure-fire way to stop a horse. If you've never used one, it can be very hazardous to you and the horse. Basically it drops the horse on its face pretty much instantly, even if the horse is at a dead run.

Since you seem to be on your way now, it may not be of much use to you in this particular situation, but I have yet to be disappointed with a you tube search for instructional videos.
Anything I've lost the manual for or had those ever-popular extra parts left over, I look to see if some kind soul has posted a tutorial video. Some of them are extremely helpful!

Update is: We traded the pony cart for a horse cart, we have an almost complete horse harness (missing the headstall) but the guy is looking for a headstall for me to trade for breeding one of his cows. I have started driving my filly in the "full harness" and she is coming along very well.
Thanks for posting this. I actually got the same idea a week or so back and looked on youtube and found harnessing a horse video's as well as starting to train to drive. So thanks! We are on the same page.
I still would love any advice that you all can give on training, harnessing etc. As well as maybe a book or two to read to get me started (more than im pretending to know to do now :oops: )
