I had a bull semen tested yesterday. I wasn't able to be there but my brother said the the probe the vet was using to stimulate him wouldn't get his penis extended out of his sheath. The vet just took a sample of what came dribbling out the end of the sheath. I know this bull is capable of breeding, I've seen his calves. The vet said that some bulls are just built so that they don't respond to the currents from the probe. I'm wondering if maybe his batteries were just low. I paid the bill, but I still don't have the results yet. My brother says he's heard of this before but I've never had a bull do that before. Any thoughts?

no i havn't seen this , but i have seen them have trouble & finally take just a little dribble. seen them put some bulls to the ground with those electro-ejaculators. that.s why my vet wouldn't use one

Just talked to the vet. The bull tested at 76%. 56% dead sperm cells. He hasn't been out with any open cows since November so maybe his pipes are just a bit rusty. Still I've got 28 breedable animals to put with him this year. Guess I may have to break down and buy a second bull.

My vet tells me if they have not been with cows they will test low. Turn him out if you still want his genetics with a bull that you want to replace him. After the season is over test him. I will be willing to bet the results will be different. Tested a few myself and that "river water" what my vet calls the stuff befor the real stuff will look only half or worse than the good thick stuff.

Well, when I semen test a bull, I give them three tries. The first, if good will be enough, but if lots of dead sperm at the beginning of a season, he gets try number two and three. Maybe I've got a magic touch, but I've yet to get a bull who didn't extend. Hmmmm.....

You can certainly fry the nerves and get little good if you hit the voltage with the electroejaculator too high...I take it slow and easy and get good collections at a lower voltage than the guys I work with do. Also, malpositioning/bad batteries etc will screw up the test as well, and even a cold test tube or slides for collection/testing can blow it!

The guy that collects my bull told me to turn him out and let him breed one or two before we brought him out to be collected. He says that will "clean him out" and we will get a better population for the straws. It does make sence...

Well, from some of the spam I used to get on our email, they advertise some 'young ladies' that have barnyard skills, and may be able to come out and get results from your bull. Although, what I gather they often specialize in horses and donkeys. So I am not sure about cattle. :cboy:

Seems like I saw that at the Blue Fox club in Tijuana back in the 60's
