I think it is odd that throughout this whole thing, gas didn't go up significantly. Back two summers ago, when gas was four and five dollars a gallon, it was blamed on a refinery explosion and the issues coming out of that. I dare say we lost a lot more production this time. I guess it doesn't matter how much oil you have if you can't refine it.
Anyway, I think it's odd. Seemed like the perfect excuse for all the oil companies to raise prices and it just didn't seem to happen. Not that I'm complaining...
I just hope this lastes thing works. Those people who make their livings on the gulf coase fishing and processing really took a hit. And they don't all strike me as people who are satisfied to sit back and ask for a handout. They want to work.
I did see a young woman being interviewed about six weeks ago who had lost her job shucking oysters. She was complaining about how she was going to make ends meet, and I could not help but notice that her nails were professionally manicured and she had a laptop with the internet there in her home.
I don't know about yall, but when finances got tough for me, back when I was single, we didn't have internet or cable, and I dang sure wasn't spending the twenty dollars a week it takes to get my nails done. I have folks coming into the library every day we are open to use the internet to look for jobs. It's a public access thing and we don't charge for it. We also filter out myspace and facebook and all that nonsense, since we are in a school. I can assist people in using a library code to get onto craigslist, but that's about it.
I still don't get my nails done. It was a phase...
