Below is our new dalmation puppy. Girls named her "dip and dots", which we've shortened to "dd". Always had dogs around, but mostly hunting dogs (labs, golden retrievers,etc.). Any one have any dalmation specific tips for me?

Hi,

Keep an eye on her and the kids, I've been told (by reputable people) that Dalmations can be aggressive. Dalmations also have a tendency to be deaf under certain circumstances, but I can't remember what those circumstances are. Sorry. I have also read that they tend to be dumber than a box of rocks, but don't know how true that is. Since the negative comments are concluded, she's sure a cute little thing!

I did some research and found that one out of every 6 dalmations are born deaf. She isn't. They do a slap test behind the dog to tell. I've heard of the box of rocks also. Hoping for the best; I knew I was in trouble when the girls saw the puppies.

It's hard to resist such cute little things - there is just something about the spots!

Msscamp, weirdest thing:

In the litter with this puppy was a male puppy that had maybe 6 or 7 spots. He looked so cool for a dalmation; I can't ever remember seeing one with so few spots. Ofcourse, the daughters would have nothing of that, and they picked the one they wanted. And convinced me to pay $250 for the puppy. I'm wrapped. :(

cypress if i had known you wuz looking for a black and white dog i could have hooked you up for free. somebody let a black and white dong (DOG! EGAD, what a typo!) and a white dog with a brown head out at the back of the farm on the road yesterday. sadly the black and white dog got runover overnightwaiting there for his owner to come back for him. i dont know about the whitey, probably will starve for a few days and then someone will shoot him...

(I'm maxed out on dogs.)

Neighbor had a damnation. Nipped my mom, chased my wife, bit the neighbor, got hit twice. 2nd time was the charm. On a lighter note: Cute pup!

Beefy, you been looking in my horse pasture? My arabian colt has a black and white dong.

We raised dalmations for about 10 yrs. Don't recall the bloodlines anymore as it was about 12-13 yrs ago. We'd have the occasional puppy with a blue eye, which supposedly went with being def. Never did have any def ones though, must have been lucky I guess. We used to get a few that would have a solid black patch on their eye or a solid black ear. It's funny that when we started raising them, the brokers wanted the ones with the black patches, then they remade the 101 dalmations movie (which by the way had several with patches) and then the brokers claimed they couldn't sell them. I think it was all a big hoax.

Anyway, of the 3 males and 4 females we had through the years, we never had a dumb one, and we never had an aggressive one. Always had other dogs running with them, so I can't really say that they were territorial either, as they always got along. They are fairly high energy dogs (some people mistake this for dumbness). They are obsessive tail waggers and will catch you off guard with a hard slap to the thigh every once in a while with their tail. Ours were alway good guard dogs as well. Well maybe not guard dogs, but they'd let you know if someone pulled in the driveway long before they pulled up to the house.

One more short story. 2 of the females that we raised pups out of, we got from another breeder down the road. Somewhere in their lineage they picked up the "smiling" gene. The UPS man would not get out of his truck because he thought they would bite him, but they were just smiling. They'd run up to his truck, tail wagging and show all their teeth in a big ol smile, never growled or anything. We were a caught of guard the first time they did it to us too, but then we got to where we could talk to them and get them excited and get them to do it when we wanted them to. It was great entertainment, and I don't know how many of my friends were scared to death of our dogs until I told them what was going on.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Did you get to see the puppy at less than a week of age? Its kind of interesting because the don't start getting their spots until they are about a week old. When they are born they look like little white rats.

They also do a LOT of chewing on things as they grow. Make sure you have plenty of chew toys or bones for them, otherwise they will make your garden house into a soaker hose.

We used to have a yellow lab that'd smile. It was kind of alarming for strangers, but always funny around us. She was wicked smart, too.

A friend bought a Dalmation for his 6 yr old daughter, came in from the farm the next day to find dog and child covered in tag pen ink-she had been trying to 'join the dots'. :)

That is too funny! :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

We had a deaf dalmation for years. She was smart as a whip. I taught her several signs and she was happy to obey. The problem was getting her attention so she saw my signs. She was definitely a "them versus us" dog. We kept her mostly shut up in the yard because she loved to chase cars, though. She finally got arthiritis so bad in her back that I had her put down. Good luck with her.

I just remember hearing that they had been overbred during the 101 Dalmations craze and had gotten a bad rep. I think lots of folks just got them because they were cute not realizing what they were getting themselves into. I remember when I lived in a duplex once several years ago and my neighbor got one. They kept it in the house because we had no back yards. Came home one day and he had eaten the furniture. Fluff everywhere. Then when they would let him out, you went inside because he would maul you trying to get attention. Not a dog for the faint of heart.

I think that with consistent training, though, it should make a good dog. I have a long haired dauschund that has the "dumb as bag 'o rocks" syndrome, and he's even coming around!

My friend has a red border collie that smiles, scared the shi* outta me when I saw it the first time, I had never seen anything like it!! hahaha

Really cute puppy :)
