The first anthrax case of the spring has been reported, but it is a long way from where the majority of cases were last year. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says a cow in the Rural Municipality of Wilton died of anthrax last week. The farm has been quarantined and other animals vaccinated. Saskatchewan went through its worst anthrax outbreak ever in 2006, when 806 animals died on 153 farms, mainly in northeast and north-central areas. Anthrax spores can lie dormant in the soil for decades before coming to the surface. A heavy spring runoff may unearth more anthrax spores this year. However, Dr. Sandra Stephens with the CFIA says widespread vaccinations should reduce the number of cases. Most reports of anthrax come during the summer grazing season. However, 8 cattle died in Saskatchewan this winter likely after ingesting spores in soil attached to hay bales.)
