Here is the comment posed by TexasBred that I didn't get a chance to respond to.

Here is the entire subject he was talking about. viewtopic.php?f=12&t=41428

And here is the answer.

Lebanon CT to Lanesboro MN is 1246 miles. 1246 x $.008 = $9.96 per cwt for frieght charges. The Lanesboro MN average selling price for fed cattle in Nov 2007 was $89.10 the average paid to producer in state of MN for fed cattle in Nov 2007 was $88.70. According to packalip fed cattle were selling in CT for $60 to $65 cwt.

$89.10 - $9.96 = $79.14.

What would you rather do pay to have your cattle hauled out of state to Lanesboro MN and receive $79.14 cwt after paying the trucking or sell them in CT for $60 to $65 cwt. In my mind $ 79.14 beats $65.00 everytime.

As far as knowing how many cwt of cattle the man did or did not have is a useless figure and not even necessary. Using the CT fed cattle market price of $65 cwt He could have bought the entire 480 cwt to fill a pot and still have made $6787 on the load. Regardless if it is a off the cuff comment with no foundation I will take the $6787 net profit everytime. The cattle industry is fast paced and ever changing your best chance at success is to try and keep up. If you can't understand ask for help.

Well it appears he still can't understand. He must have difficulty with math. Yeah that would be right his math has been proven suspect before.

Somn do your calculations on about 4-5 head at 500 each. How many cattle you're hauling figures into the equation as well.(you guessed and used 48,000 lbs.) I doubt that hauler will haul 2000 lbs of beef 1246 miles for 200 bucks.

Now enough of this mess. Grow up and post something worthwhile. You're beginning to be a pest.

I already went over this but I will do it again the amount of cwt the man did or did not have is a useless figure He could have bought the entire load and still made money buying at $65 cwt and receiving $79.14 cwt after paying the trucking. What part of that do you not understand?

100# is 100# regardless of what you are hauling calves or cows or steers. The cost to haul a cwt of any type of cattle is still $9.96 from Lebanon CT to Lanesboro MN. When you can buy cattle in CT for $65 cwt and sell them in MN for $89.10 you more than paid the $9.96 cwt for trucking. You really struggle with math don't you.

Somn your math gives us all problems. Sure glad you're a feedlot owner and not a math instructor at any level. Did the man EVER say he had a truckload to haul or did you invent that for him in order to make your case???? Did he have 4??? 5??? 6??? The cost per hundred you quote is correct ONLY for a full load. Get the exact number and then crunch your numbers otherwise it's all meaningless.

This is my last response. I refuse to litter the board replying to your comments.

How many times do you need to be told it does not matter if he only owned one steer at those prices he could have bought the entire 480 cwt and made well over $6000. That takes me right back to my original post on the matter the $.008 per cwt per mile to haul them elsewhere was cheap compared to what he loses selling there. If you still can't figure it out Have someone sit down with you and get some math flashcards and work on your math.

That is probably good thinking on your part I'm not sure who paints themselves into a corner faster you or mnmtranching. Try to remember $89.10 - $9.96= $79.14

$79.14- $65= $14.14

Thats a $14.14 per cwt profit for doing absolutly nothing. If every rancher and feedlot owner could make that kind of money for doing nothing they all could afford to hire a nutritionist with bad math skills to give them advice. ;-)
