I have a steer that is scoured all of the time. Always a mess. But... he seems to be fine. Always eats and drinks well, usually the pig at the trough, plays with the dog when he out in the fields. He also seems to be growing and gaining weight fine. At least he is keeping up with the others. Currently they are just on pasture, no hay yet still plenty of grass here. I give a little grain at night to keep them comming to the pen.

Do I need to worry or not ? Any suggestions on how to clear him up would be appreciated. I'm new to cattle and this is one of my first steers so any help would be appreciated.

Scouring and "The Green Grass Squirts" aren't the same thing. Some animals are pretty loose when on young grass, or they aren't getting enough dry matter in the pasture. A few days on hay will usually clear them right up.

Good rule of thumb...no don't use your thumb to test...is that if it has color and forms some resembalnce to a patty when it hits the ground then I wouldn't worry. DMc

Sure wouldn;t work with ours when on green pasture. A solid stream 5 feet behind them sure doesn;t look much like a patty to me.

Dun....this could get confusing to the uniniatiated...I agree with you on fresh pasture squirts but it still leaves some edges on the puddle. Never had the inclination to test the viscosity of the stream but I think that it would be OK to say that a person would know the scours when they saw it produced. Been some time since we had a case of scours on our place, knock on wood, hope this next season is trouble free as well.
Wonder if posting pics of said production would be out of place or in bad taste though I'm sure that we have some folks that actually have some to share.
As you can probably tell, all is caught up and it's cold and damp today so I have some time on my hands...think that I'll have some lunck with my so called cronies. Dave Mc
